HBU Completes Sweep with 6-3 Win Over Lions

HOUSTON, Texas – Houston Baptist completed the sweep of a Southland Conference against Southeastern Louisiana with a 6-3 win Sunday at Husky Field.

Southeastern (14-9, 5-4 Southland) dropped its fifth straight game, it's longest losing streak since the 2014 season.

The Lions led twice in the game against HBU (11-11, 3-3 Southland), jumping out in front in the first inning.

After catcher Daniel Wasinger reached on a one-out single in the first, he advanced to second base on a passed ball. Third baseman Taylor Schwaner drove in Wasinger, ripping an RBI single down the third-base line.

HBU came right back to take the lead in the bottom of the inning.

After Southeastern starting pitcher Carlisle Koestler walked right fielder Brandon Brintz with one out, Spencer Halloran pulled an RBI double down the third-base line. He scored when catcher Jake Pulcheon followed with a single to left field.

The Lions tied the game, 2-2, in the third.

Schwaner, a junior from New Orleans, Louisiana, tripled off the wall in right field with one out. He scored when second baseman Carson Crites followed with a double into the gap in right-center field.

Southeastern regained the lead, 3-2, in the fourth.

Left fielder Trenon Trsoclair dumped a one-out single into center field and then stole second base. Trosclair scored on Drew Avans' two-out double over the center fielder's head.

The Huskies once again came right back to wipe out Southeastern's lead.

First baseman Carey Jones led off the bottom of the inning with a double down the left-field line and advanced to third on a groundout. Second baseman Jack Fitzgerald greeted Avans (1-1), relieving Koestler, with a sacrifice fly to center, plating the tying run.

HBU took the lead for good, 4-3, in the fifth.

Avans hit Huskies' center fielder Zane Otten with a pitch to open up the inning. He moved up to second on a groundout and advanced to third on a passed ball. Halloran drove in Otten with a double to center.

The Huskies tacked on a pair of runs in the eighth against the Southeastern bullpen.

Zach Carter (4-2), the HBU starter, earned the win. He allowed three runs on seven hits in 5.1 innings of work. He walked one, hit a pair and struck out two batters. JT Newton tossed 3.2 scoreless innings to close out the game, earning his second save of the season.

Avans, the second of four Lion pitchers in the game, suffered the loss, allowing one run on two hits in 1.2 innings pitched. He struck out one.

Schwaner led the Lions at the plate, going 3-for-4 with an RBI triple and a run scored.

Southeastern returns home Wednesday to host No. 10-ranked UL Lafayette at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field. The teams will resume a suspended game at 5 p.m. prior to the contest already scheduled for that evening.

Rained out on Opening Night, Southeastern and the Ragin' Cajuns rescheduled the game for the following Monday, but rain affected the schedule once again.

Suspended in the bottom of the 11th inning, tied 4-4, play will resume at 5 p.m. Wednesday with two outs, Taylor Schwaner running at first base and Drew Avans at the plate.

The contest originally scheduled for March 29 will follow, at least 30 minutes later, beginning no earlier than 6 p.m.

A single ticket, for the March 29 game, will allow admittance to both the resumption and originally scheduled contest. The stadium will not be cleared between games. Tickets dated February 17 or February 20 will be invalid.

General Admission tickets for each Lion home game are $9 for adults and $6 for children (ages 3-12). Tax is included in the price of admission. Southeastern students are admitted free with a valid university ID card.
