Underwood Reaches 1,000 Career Points at Nicholls

Junior is 20th player in school history to reach scoring milestone

THIBODAUX, La. – Southeastern Louisiana junior guard Taylin Underwood scored 16 points to become the 20th student-athlete in school history to reach 1,000 career points in the Lady Lions' 92-57 loss to Nicholls in Southland Conference women's basketball action Saturday afternoon at Stopher Gym.

The loss officially eliminated SLU (5-23, 3-14 Southland) from Southland Conference Tournament contention. Nicholls improved to 9-18 overall and 6-10 in Southland play.

Underwood became the first Lady Lion to reach 1,000 career points since Elizabeth Styles hit the mark in the final game of the 2014-15 season. The Livingston, Louisiana native heads into the final game of the season with 1,005 points in her nearly three full years in the green and gold.

Underwood was one of two Lady Lions in double figures, as freshman guard Charliee Dugas finished with a team-high 18 points. Freshman guard Courtney Dawsey matched her career-high with eight points, while junior forward Tytiana Hall contributed seven points and a game-high 13 rebounds. Sophomore guard Jaclyn Scholvin led SLU with five assists.

Nicholls featured a balanced effort, as five players reached double figures. Cassidy Barrios led the way with a double-double effort, finishing with 21 points and 11 rebounds. Barrios was joined in double figures by Taylor Morrison (14 points), Tykeria Williams (14 points), Emani White (12 points) and Hope Pawlowski (11 points).

Williams also led the Colonels with six assists, while Charles posted five steals and helped force Southeastern into 24 turnovers.

After building a 10-point first quarter lead, Nicholls would stretch the lead to as many as 18 points in the second quarter. A jumper by Underwood cut the lead to 40-24 with 2:01 left in the half, but Nicholls closed the quarter with a 9-1 run to take a 49-25 lead into the break.

Things didn't get better for Southeastern in the second half. The lone highlight of the third quarter was Underwood's triple with 7:47 remaining in the period to allow her to pass the 1,000-point career milestone.

The Lady Lions would get no closer than 21 and went into the final quarter down 70-44. Nicholls' lead would grow to as many as 37 in the final period on the way to the 35-point victory

Following Saturday's contest, Southeastern will close out the 2016-17 regular season with a 5:30 p.m. game at New Orleans on Thursday. Thursday's game can be heard live in the Hammond area on KSLU-FM (90.9), online at www.LionSports.net/listenlive and via the TuneIn Radio app.
