UNO Outlasts SLU, 102-87, in 2016-17 Finale

Underwood ties single-season 3-point record in final game of the season

NEW ORLEANS, La. – Southeastern Louisiana junior guard Taylin Underwood tied her own single-season school record for three-point field goals and poured in 36 points, but the Lady Lions were outscored by New Orleans, 102-87, in their 2016-17 season finale Thursday evening at Lakefront Arena.

Southeastern closes out the 2016-17 campaign with a 5-24 overall record and a 3-15 mark in Southland Conference play. UNO improved to 14-13 overall and 9-8 in league action with Thursday's win.

Underwood made four three-point field goals to give her 73 threes for the season – matching her single-season school record total from a season ago. The Livingston, Louisiana native will enter her senior season needing 19 treys to surpass the career record of 189 three-point field goals held by former Lady Lion Brooke Necaise (2004-08).

Thursday's performance marked the fifth game with 30 or more points this season and the 15th game with 20-plus points for Underwood. She will enter her senior season with 1,041 career points and needing 33 points to crack the school's career top 15. Her 2016-17 scoring average of 18.6 points per game is the highest by a Lady Lion since Stacey Turner averaged 18.8 points per game in the 1999-00 season.

Underwood was one of two Lady Lions to score in double figures on Thursday, as sophomore guard Ashailee Brailey made four threes of her own to finish with 14 points. Brailey also led SLU with eight rebounds, while Underwood dished out a team-high five assists.

Brailey and freshman guard Charliee Dugas contributed two steals apiece. Southeastern's lone senior, forward Chey Stewart finished with four points and three rebounds in her final game in the Green and Gold.

UNO was led by Randi Brown, who finished with 41 points, eight rebounds and four steals. Shania Woods contributed to the Privateer attack with a double-double effort of 18 points and 13 rebounds, while Kayla Mundy (14 points) and Jewel Angelo (11 points) also reached double figures.

A layup by Dugas cut the UNO lead to 15-12 with 4:04 remaining in the opening quarter. The Privateers closed out the period with an 8-2 run to take a 23-14 advantage into the second quarter.

UNO would grow the lead to as many as 21 in the second quarter. But threes by Brailey, sophomore forward Baylie Stears and freshman guard Courtney Dawsey highlighted a 15-4 run to close the half and SLU went into the break within striking distance, trailing, 47-37.

Southeastern was able to keep the score within reach for most of the third quarter. However, UNO outscored the Lady Lions, 16-7, over the final 3:35 of the period and went into the fourth quarter with a commanding 79-60 lead.

The Lady Lions were able to close the gap to 10 in the waning minutes, but could never get the deficit to single digits. UNO was able to hang on to avenge SLU's 85-70 Feb. 11 win in Hammond with a 15-point home victory of its own.
