Lions’ Anstiss Ties For 2nd At All-American

HUMBLE, Texas – A rain delay during Friday's first round proved to be a refresher for the weekend for the Southeastern Louisiana men's golf team at the All-American Intercollegiate Presented by Coca-Cola at the Golf Club of Houston.

The Lions closed out the tournament with a 3-over-par 291 on Sunday to finish seventh at 3-over 867 against a stellar field that included four teams ranked in the top 40 nationally.

Southeastern opened the tournament with a 4-over 292 in a round that finished up Saturday morning. The Lions then shot a 4-under 282 in the second round later Saturday to move into a tie for seventh. The 291 final round allowed Southeastern to nip Southland Conference rival McNeese by a shot. Baylor won by five shots over No. 1-ranked Vanderbilt with a 28-under 836.

"It was a great tournament," Southeastern head coach Jake Narro said. "We beat McNeese by a shot which is important and it was a tremendous field. Four of them were ranked, including Vanderbilt at No. 1. It's been a real good weekend and it's certainly a great way to start the semester, both for our individuals and as a team."

Leading the charge for Southeastern for Southeastern was senior James Anstiss who finished in a five-way tie for second at 7-under 209 following a final round 2-under 70. Anstiss tied his best career finish and recorded the best score by a Lion in 2016-17.

    Baylor's Cooper Dossey took a 3-stroke victory with a 10-under 206.

"James did not have a great fall after having a tremendous junior year," Narro said of Anstiss, who finished the fall with a 75.50 stroke average after earning All-Conference honors in 2016. "You just don't play good all the time and you do hit a slump but good players come out of them. This could really springboard him into a great final run for him."

Anstiss opened his final round with birdies on the par-4 first and third holes before bogey the par-5 fourth. He bounced back with a birdie on the par-4 fifth but bogeyed both the par-5 eighth and par-3 ninth. Anstiss rallied on the back nine with a pair of birdies at No. 10 and No. 15 and seven pars.

The tie for second matched his finish at the 2016 Southland Championships.

Senior Paul Obermann finished in a six-way tie for 19th at 1-under 215 after a 2-over 74 on Sunday. Obermann double bogeyed the fifth and eighth but recovered with birdies on number 10, 13 and 14 on the back nine.

Sophomore William Meyers fired a final-round 2-under 70 to climb 20 spots into a seven-way tie for 25th at even-par 216. Meyers birdied No. 2, then eagled the par-5 fourth, his second eagle in as many days. He added birdies at No. 5 and 13.

Sophomore Joris Etlin closed his tournament with a 5-over 77 to come in 84th at 15-over 231. His round included birdies at 11, 14 and 15.

    Sophomore Bailey Smith was 93rd at 23-over 239 following a 10-over 82.

Southeastern will next compete at the Louisiana Classics scheduled for Feb. 27-28 at Oakbourne Country Club in Lafayette, Louisiana.
