Lions Host SFA For Senior Day

    HAMMOND, La. – Southeastern Louisiana senior center Dominic Nelson will be honored as the Lions hold their annual Senior Day against Southland Conference rival Stephen F. Austin on Saturday at 5 p.m. in the University Center.

    Saturday is also Alumni Day, as all former Lions are invited to be honored at halftime of the contest between the Lions (14-13, 7-7 Southland) and Lumberjacks (14-11, 9-4 Southland).

    The Southeastern Channel will provide a free live video stream of the game at  www2.southeastern.edu/thesoutheasternchannel/lionslive/.     Southeastern broke a three-game losing streak with a come-from-behind 73-66 win at Northwestern State on Thursday. The Lions rallied from a 12-point first-half deficit by out-scoring the Demons 46-31 in the second half, highlighted by an 18-0 run. Southeastern is now tied for seventh in the conference with Central Arkansas with four games to play.

    Junior guard Davon Hayes finished with a game-high 21 points. Sophomore guard Marlain Veal dished out a career-high 10 assists to go with 11 points for his first career double-double. Junior forward Eddy Polanco added 13 points and seven rebounds. Nelson grabbed a team-high nine rebounds and blocked two shots to move into fifth place on the Lions' all-time season list with 55.

    Stephen F. Austin moved into second place in the Southland with a 70-61 win over Lamar on Thursday, the Lumberjacks' third straight victory. Sophomore forward T.J. Holyfield led five Lumberjacks in double figures with 17 points. Freshman guard Kevon Harris added 15 points. Junior guard Ty Charles had a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds and also had five assists. Senior guard Dallas Cameron contributed 11 points and junior guard Ivan Canete 10. SFA shot 50 percent from the field and had 36 rebounds.

    Saturday's game will feature the league's top two scoring defenses with Southeastern allowing 68.1 points on 42.8 percent shooting, second best in the conference. SFA is giving up 68.6 points while allowing opponents to shoot 45.5 percent.

    Southeastern is averaging 71.5 points per game on 45.1 percent shooting, including a league fourth-best 37.8 percent on 3s.

    Veal leads the Lions with 13.3 points per game while ranking sixth in the conference in assists (4.6 apg) and eighth in steals (1.7 spg). He needs two assists and five steals to move into the Lions' season top-10 in both categories. Hayes (13.1 ppg) has a team-high 18 double-digit scoring games. Nelson (4.0 ppg) is third in the league and 40th nationally in blocks (2.04 bpg) while tying for ninth in the league in rebounding (6.8 rpg).

    Junior guard Jabbar Singleton (4.6 ppg, 67 assists) and junior forward James Currington (8.1 ppg, 6.4 rpg) are the other projected starters for Southeastern. Sophomore forward Moses Greenwood (11.8 ppg, 6.1 rpg) and Polanco (9.7 ppg, 4.0 rpg) are the leading scorers off the bench for the Lions.

    For SFA, Holyfield is fifth in the Southland in blocks (1.4) and 14th in rebounding (6.5 rpg) while averaging 11.7 points per game. Canete is also averaging 11.7 points. Junior forward Leon Gilmore III (9.9 ppg, 5.8 rpg), Charles (9.5 ppg, 5.9 rpg) and Cameron (8.8 ppg, 69 assists) are the other projected starters for the Lumberjacks. Stephen F. Austin is averaging 70.0 points on 44.7 percent from the field.

    Rebounding continues to be a key factor for Southeastern. The Lions out-rebounded Northwestern State 46-30 and are now 12-4 on the season when winning the rebounding battle. Southeastern is third in the league in rebounding defense (32.4 rpg) and rebounding margin (plus-4.0) while ranking fourth in rebounds (36.4 rpg). SFA leads the conference in allowing just 30.1 rebounds per contest while grabbing 34.5. The Lumberjacks' plus-4.4 margin is second in the league.

    Stephen F. Austin has won four straight and seven of the past 10 against Southeastern to take a 30-15 lead in the series which dates back to the 1976-77 season. The Lumberjacks won 89-69 in Hammond in the last meeting on Jan. 4, 2016. The Lions' last win came at home, 54-50, on Feb. 16, 2013.

    Southeastern is 11-12 at home versus SFA.

    The Lions will close out their 2016-17 home schedule against Central Arkansas at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
