SLU Continues Road Swing at Bethune-Cookman

Lady Lions look for first win of 2017-18 on Sunday at 2 p.m.

11/25/2017 1:39:00 PM

HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana women's basketball team will continue its seven-game road swing on Sunday, traveling to face Bethune-Cookman in a 2 p.m. (Central) non-conference contest at Moore Gymnasium in Daytona Beach, Florida.

The Lady Lions (0-5) will look for their first win of the season when it visits the unbeaten Wildcats (3-0). The game can be heard live in the Hammond area on KSLU-FM (90.9), online at www.LionSports.net/listenlive and via the TuneIn Radio app. Live video and live stats, provided by Bethune-Cookman, will be accessible via the women's basketball schedule page at www.LionSports.net.

After playing five games in the first eight days of the 2017-18 campaign, the Lady Lions will head into Sunday's game having had over a week off competition. Last Saturday in Akron, Ohio, SLU dropped an 81-60 decision to Kent State in the finale of the Akron Classic. Junior guard Ashailee Brailey led Southeastern with 14 points in the loss, while freshman forward Caitlyn Williams (13 points) and senior guard Taylin Underwood (10 points).

Underwood is the leading scorer for the Lady Lions, averaging 18.2 points per game. The Livingston, Louisiana native needs two three-point field goals to become the school's career leader in that category and ranks 12th in school history with 1,132 career points.

Underwood is joined among the top scorers for the Lady Lions by Caitlyn Williams (11.6 ppg), Brailey (7.8 ppg) and sophomore guard Charliee Dugas (6.8 ppg). Caitlyn Williams also leads SLU with 6.8 rebounds per game, while Underwood paces the team with 2.6 assists per game.

Southeastern has been active on the defensive end, forcing foes into 22.0 turnovers per outing. Leading the SLU defensive effort is sophomore guard Tyler Morrison, who is averaging a team-high 3.1 steals per contest.

Bethune-Cookman has opened the season with consecutive victories over Edward Waters (101-60), Florida International (77-59) and Prairie View (77-52). The Wildcats have done so thanks to averaging 85.0 points per game and carrying a plus-12.0 rebounding margin.

BCU has a balanced offensive attack, as sophomore guard Kanesha Battle (15.3 ppg), junior center Chasimmie Brown (14.3 ppg) and junior guard Angel Golden (13.0 ppg) all average in double figures. Junior forward Ashanti Hunt leads the Wildcats with 10.0 rebounds and 6.7 assists per contest.

Southeastern has won the two previous meetings between the two schools. Last season in Hammond, SLU pulled away for a 75-63 victory. The first meeting was during the 1982-83 season, as the Lady Lions earned a 69-59 win.

In last season's win, Underwood drilled eight three-point field goals on the way to a 35-point, 10-rebound performance. The Lady Lions forced BCU into 26 turnovers, as Brailey and SLU then-junior guard Bre Warren had three steals each.

Following Sunday's contest, Southeastern will continue its road swing at Grambling. The Lady Lions and the host Lady Tigers will tip off on Thursday at 6 p.m. on the GSU campus.
