Lions Renew Rivalry With ULM

    HAMMOND, La. – Southeastern Louisiana and Louisiana-Monroe renew their rivalry on the hardcourt Thursday at 7 p.m. in the Fant-Ewing Coliseum in Monroe, La.

    ULM is Southeastern's fourth-most common opponent with Thursday's game being the 92nd meeting between the Lions and Warhawks. ULM leads 61-30 in a series that dates back to 1952. Southeastern and ULM were Southland Conference rivals from 1998-2006 but have met just once since, a 68-61 Warhawk victory in Monroe on Dec. 10, 2012. Southeastern's last victory over ULM came in 2006, a 42-40 win in Hammond. The Lions' last win in Monroe was a 70-57 triumph in 2005.

    Junior guard Marlain Veal tied a career-high with 10 field goals made in scoring 26 points at Tulane Monday, but the Green Wave shot 59.6 percent from the field in taking an 89-66 victory over the Lions (1-1). Veal also had three assists and four steals while junior Moses Greenwood had a team-high nine rebounds to go with nine points. Senior forward Jordan Capps added eight points.

    ULM (0-2) will be looking for its first win of the season on Thursday. The Warhawks opened the season with an 83-73 loss at TCU last Friday before falling 83-65 at SMU on Sunday. Senior guard/forward Sam McDaniel led four Warhawks in double figures against TCU with 21 points. McDaniel and senior guard Marvin Jean-Pierre each had 14 points at SMU.

Southeastern
    Southeastern is averaging 82.5 points after its first two games on 43.7 percent shooting from the field, including 39.0 percent on 3-pointers.
 
    The Lions lead the Southland Conference and rank 13th nationally with 67 free throw attempts, making 21 - second in the league and 21st in the nation.
 
    Southeastern is allowing 78.0 points per contest on 53.4 percent shooting, including 44.1 percent on 3s. The Lions have a plus-4.5 rebounding margin, averaging 37.5 rebounds while giving up 33.0.
 
    Southeastern has nabbed 10 steals, third in the conference and 28th in the country. That has helped the Lions force 21.5 turnovers a game, good for fourth in the league and 17th nationally.
 
    Veal ranks fifth in the league with 21.5 points per game and second with nine assists. He is also second in the SLC and 25th in the country with six steals.
 
    Capps (11.0 ppg) and senior guard Eddy Polanco (10.0 ppg) are also averaging in double figures for the Lions.
 
    Greenwood (7.0 ppg) tops the team with 9.0 rebounds per game, fourth-best in the league. He is also second in the conference with 18 total rebounds and fourth with three blocks.
 
    Veal, Polanco, Capps, senior guard Jabbar Singleton (9.5 ppg, 4 assists) and junior guard Keith Charleston (5.0 ppg, 3.5 rpg) are the projected starters for the Lions.
 
ULM
    ULM goes into Thursday's game averaging 69.0 points on 37.7 percent shooting, including 44.2 percent on 3-pointers. The Warhawks are allowing 83.0 points on 50.4 percent shooting, 41.9 percent beyond the arc.
 
    ULM is pulling down 34.0 rebounds a contest while giving up 38.0. The Warhawks have forced 28 turnovers while turning the ball over 26 times.
 
    McDonald is averaging a team-best 17.5 points and is also pulling down 6.0 rebounds per game. Junior forward Travis Munnings is averaging 9.5 points with a team-high 7.0 rebounds. Senior guard Jordan Harris has a team-high seven assists and four steals while averaging 13.5 points. Jean-Pierre is also in double figures with 13.0 points per contest while grabbing 6.5 rebounds.
 
    Harris, Jean-Pierre, Munnings, freshman guard Michael Ertel (6.0 ppg, 4 assists) and sophomore center Sam Alabakis (2.0 ppg, 2.5 rpg) are the projected starters for ULM.
 
    Head coach Keith Richard is in his eighth season with the Warhawks.

UP NEXT:
   Southeastern opens play in the Savannah Invitational Sunday at Valparaiso at 3 p.m. The Lions then travel to Kent State Tuesday for a 6 p.m. tip. After a break for Thanksgiving, Southeastern concludes play in the tournament with a pair of 1 p.m. games in Birmingham, Ala. – Friday versus Samford and Saturday against Mississippi Valley State.
