Lions Look To Complete Season Sweep of ACU

    ABILENE, Texas – Southeastern Louisiana will look to complete a Southland Conference season sweep of Abilene Christian when the Lions visit the Wildcats Thursday at 7:30 p.m. in Moody Coliseum.

    Southeastern (9-8, 2-2) took a 75-53 win at home over Abilene Christian (7-8, 1-3) on Dec. 31. Junior forward Eddy Polanco hit five 3-pointers to lead four Lions in double figures with 17 points. Junior forward James Currington added 14 points while sophomore forward Moses Greenwood had 13 points and a team-high eight rebounds. Sophomore guard Dimi Cook contributed 10 points and three assists.

    The Lions will try to fix its troubles on the road as they conclude a three-game Texas swing. Southeastern is 2-8 overall away from Hammond in 2016-17 after dropping its first two conference road games at Houston Baptist and Lamar last week. Abilene Christian is 5-2 at home this season.

    In Saturday's 74-54 loss at Lamar, Junior guard Jabbar Singleton led Southeastern with 13 points while Greenwood added 12. Sophomore guard Marlain Veal had five rebounds and four assists. Senior center Dominic Nelson and Currington also had five rebounds each as the Lions out-rebounded Lamar, 36-34. But Southeastern had a season-high 22 turnovers while scoring its fewest points of the season.

    Southeastern goes into Thursday's game averaging 72.6 points per game on 45.6 percent shooting and is tied for second in the conference in 3-point percentage at 37.4 percent. The Lions continue to lead the league in scoring defense (68.8 ppg) and are second in field goal percentage defense (43.0 percent) and third in scoring margin (plus-3.8). Southeastern is also tied for first in the Southland in rebounding margin at plus-3.9 in averaging 36.4 while allowing 32.5.

    Veal leads the team with 13.9 points per game while ranking fifth in the conference in assists (4.2 apg) and eighth in steals (1.7 spg). Junior guard/forward Davon Hayes is averaging 12.8 points and 4.3 rebounds while recording 29 assists and 17 steals. Greenwood is recording 12.5 points and 5.9 rebounds, while ranking third in the league in field goal percentage (59.0) .  Nelson (4.7 ppg) is second in the league in blocks (41, 2.4 bpg), tied for second in rebounds (122) and tied for sixth in rebounds per game (7.2) and is 27th in the country with 2.41 blocks per game. Singleton (4.0 ppg) has dished out 49 assists, ninth most in the league

    Abilene Christian snapped a five-game losing streak and picked up its first Southland win of the season, 69-60 over four-time reigning conference champion Stephen F. Austin on Saturday. Freshman guard Payten Ricks came off the bench to score 15. Sophomore guard Jaylen Franklin added 11 points and eight rebounds, while freshman center Jalone Friday added 10 points and six points.

    Sophomore forward Jalen Lewis leads the Wildcats and ranks 12th in the conference in scoring (14.4 ppg), 16th in rebounds (6.3 rpg) and fourth in steals (2.1 spg). He also has a team-high 37 assists. Friday is third in 3-point percentage (.455), fifth in blocks (25), seventh in field goal percentage (.535), ninth in free throw percentage (786), 14th in scoring (13.5 ppg) and 18th in rebounding (6.1 rpg). Sophomore guard Jaylen Franklin is averaging 11.1 points and 4.2 rebounds while ranking 13th in the Southland in assists (3.0 apg).

    Junior guard Drake Green (5.2 ppg, 22 assists, 15 steals), sophomore center Hayden Howell (4.5 ppg, 3.0 rpg) and junior guard Diamonte Langston (1.3 ppg) are also projected to start.

    Abilene Christian is the conference's top 3-point shooting team (.380) while ranking second overall from the field (.477).  The Wildcats are averaging 31.4 rebounds, 14.0 assists and 14.1 turnovers a game. ACU ranks fourth in scoring defense (70.9 ppg) and are holding opponents to 44.0 percent from the field, fifth best in the league. The Wildcats are allowing an average of 36.1 rebounds while forcing 14.8 turnovers, grabbing 7.5 steals and blocking 3.2 shots.

    Southeastern opens a three-game homestand versus McNeese on Sunday at 3 p.m.
