Box Score BATON ROUGE, La. – Rice held Southeastern Louisiana off to close out a 7-2 victory Sunday in the NCAA Baton Rouge Baseball Regional at Alex Box Stadium.
With the loss, Southeastern (39-20) moves on to face Utah Valley in an elimination game Sunday at 1:04 p.m. LSU and Rice (36-22) face off in the winner's bracket game 55 minutes after the conclusion of the Lions-Wolverines matchup.
The two teams played six innings on Saturday before rain forced the game to be suspended. The game resumed in the top of the seventh inning with Rice holding a 4-1 lead. The Lions jumped on Rice reliever Dane Myers immediately when play resumed.
Southland Conference Freshman of the Year
Brennan Breaud got Southeastern started with a double just inside the left field line, which junior
Jacob Seward followed with a single of his own to put a pair of runners on with one out. A groundout by junior
Ryan Byers scored Breaud and cut the Owl advantage to 4-2.
Rice dampened any chance of a Southeastern comeback in the bottom of the eighth inning. A pair of throwing errors led to a three-run inning to give the Owls a commanding 7-2 lead.
In the top of the ninth, singles by junior
Derrick Mount and Breaud put a pair of runners on with one out. Myers recovered to retire Seward and Byers to close out the victory.
Sophomore
Mac Sceroler (10-4) took the loss for the Lions, after allowing four runs (two earned) in 5.1 innings of work. Breaud led Southeastern with three hits, while Byers had a double and drove in both SLU runs.
The Lions were held to three hits on Saturday by Rice starter Blake Fox (5-7), who went six innings to earn the start, while Myers tossed the final three innings to earn his seventh save of the season. Ford Proctor and Connor Teyki led the Owls with three hits apiece.
