Anstiss, Lions Second at Southland Championships

MCKINNEY, Texas – Southeastern Louisiana junior James Anstiss tied for second after firing a final-round 2-under-par 70, helping the Lions take second at the Southland Conference Men's Golf Championships at the Stonebridge Ranch Country Club on Tuesday.

Southeastern, which started the day 11 strokes behind leader McNeese State, made a late charge after slipping to third and finished with a final-round 6-over 294. The Lions, who have finished in the top three in the tournament seven of the past eight seasons, finished at 20-over 884 overall.

McNeese, the 2015 Southland runner-up, shot a 10-over 298 to finish at 13-over 877 and receive the conference's automatic bid into the NCAA Regionals. Two-time reigning champion Sam Houston State was third at 21-over 885 following a 5-over 293.

Anstiss tied Sam Houston's Andrew Ertel at even-par 216, finishing seven strokes behind McNeese State's Martin Eriksson (7-under 209). The Queenstown, New Zealand native recorded the highest finish by a Lion at the Southland Championships since Rhys West won in 2013.

"We did good, second place, and we got a little hardware," Southeastern head coach Jake Narro said. "James finished tied for second. We couldn't quite get it done but we're almost happy."

Senior Lawrence Allan recorded his second straight top 10 finish at the Championships after tying Stephen F. Austin's Jake McCrory for seventh with a 3-over 219. Junior Paul Obermann climbed 10 spots with a final-round 1-over 73, tying for 18th with five others at 10-over 226. Freshman William Meyers was in a five-way tie for 28th at 12-over 288. Senior Eamon Bradley wrapped up his Southeastern career by tying for 36th at 14-over 230.

Anstiss, the first-round co-leader Monday after a 4-under 68, slipped into a tie for eighth following a second-round 6-over 78. He bogeyed the opening hole on Tuesday but came back with birdies at No. 3, 4 and 7 to move to 2-under at the turn. He bogeyed the 14th but came back with a birdie at No. 16.

Allan opened the day tied for sixth before carding a birdie at No. 2. He dropped a stroke at No. 5 but got it back at No. 7. He mixed in three bogeys with six pars on the back nine to finish with a 2-over 74.

Obermann led off the final round with a birdie at No. 3. After a bogey at No. 4, he birdied the seventh before bogeying the ninth. He then reeled off eight straight pars before bogeying No. 18.
