MOBILE, Ala. – Southeastern Louisiana fell, 2-1, Tuesday to No. 21-ranked South Alabama at Stanky Field, dropping its second straight after having won 19 of its last 20.
The Lions (25-9) picked up a two-out run in the first, but offense was hard to come by the rest of the way off South Alabama (26-8) starting pitcher Randy Bell (2-1).
Bell walked shortstop
Brennan Breaud, a freshman from Norco, Louisiana, to open up the game. After advancing to second on a ground out, Breaud scored on
Carson Crites' RBI double down the left-field line.
Southeastern starter
Pat Cashman (3-1) surrendered a leadoff single to Travis Swaggerty in the first, but worked around the hit.
The Lions picked up leadoff singles from
Sam Roberson in the second and Breaud in the third, but failed to get either home.
South Alabama struck for all the runs they would need in the third.
Second baseman Adam Wolfe ripped a one-out double down the third-base line. After Swaggerty walked, center fielder Cole Billingsley smacked a two-run double to left. Wolfe and Swaggerty scored, giving Bell and the Jaguars the lead.
Bell stymied the Southeastern bats the remainder of the game, surrendering just one more hit, a ninth-inning single to
Webb Bobo, on his way to a complete game.
Cashman was the hard-luck loser, allowing two runs on four hits in 5.2 innings of work.
Cliff Hurst worked a pair of scoreless innings in relief and left-hander
Payton Robinson, a freshman from Mobile, struck out the only batter he faced.
Southeastern wraps up its six-game road swing Friday at No. 22-ranked UL Lafayette, returning to Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field Saturday against the Ragin' Cajuns for Super Lion Saturday.
