Second Half Surge Allows CSU to Pull Away from Lady Lions

FORT COLLINS, Colo. – After a competitive first half, Colorado State outscored Southeastern Louisiana, 44-12, in the second half on the way to a 77-31 victory over the Lady Lions in non-conference women's basketball action Friday night at Moby Arena.

Trailing by just 14 at the break, SLU (2-5) was limited to 11.1 percent (3-for-27) shooting in the final 20 minutes. Colorado State (4-3) out-rebounded the Lady Lions, 30-11, in the second half to pull away.

"One thing I can say tonight is that our players played hard for 40 minutes," Southeastern head coach Errol Gauff said. "I can't fault our effort, but we certainly need better execution. We did a good job creating good looks, especially in the first half, but it was one of those nights when our shots weren't falling. Despite that, if we continue to have that kind of effort, we can build on that and improve."

Junior Bre Warren led Southeastern with nine points. Freshman Charliee Dugas added eight points, while sophomore Ashailee Brailey chipped in with seven. Freshman Courtney Dawsey led SLU with three assists.

Colorado State was led by Ellen Nystrom's 20-point performance, while Hannah Tvrdy joined her in double figures with 13 points. Elin Gustavsson and Nystrom each grabbed nine rebounds. Nystrom and Sofie Tryggedsson shared team-high honors with four assists.

Neither team could get anything going offensively in the opening quarter, as CSU took a 15-9 lead after the opening quarter. Nystrom scored 13 of her 17 first-half points in the second quarter, as the Rams stretched the lead to 33-19 at the break.

The third quarter opened with Colorado State ripping off a 7-0 run. The Lady Lions were limited to 1-for-11 shooting in the third period, as CSU headed into the final 10 minutes with a 54-25 lead. In the fourth quarter, Colorado State outscored SLU, 23-6, to add to its final margin of victory.

Southeastern will now take an extended break for final exams. The Lady Lions will return to action on Tuesday, Dec. 13 with a 7 p.m. contest at Jackson State. Fans will be able to receive live updates of the SLU-JSU game on Twitter at www.twitter.com/sluathletics.
