Lions Open Road Trip at Toledo

HAMMOND, La. – Southeastern Louisiana opens its final non-conference road trip of 2016-17 at Toledo Saturday at 6 p.m. (CDT) in the John F. Savage Arena.

The Lions (6-4) will also travel to North Texas on Tuesday before finishing up its non-conference slate at Southern-Baton Rouge on Dec. 28.

Saturday's game between Southeastern and Toledo (4-6) is scheduled to be broadcast on ESPN3, which is accessible online at WatchESPN.com, on smartphones and tablets via the ESPN app and streamed on televisions through Amazon Fire TV and Fire TV Stick, Apple TV, Chromecast, Roku, Xbox 360 and Xbox One.

Live stats, courtesy Toledo, can also be accessed on the Southeastern men's basketball schedule page at www.LionSports.net.

Fans may expect a high-scoring affair in the first-ever meeting between the Lions and Rockets. Southeastern is coming off its 12th straight win at home, 108-69, over Florida A&M on Monday. The Lions cracked the 100-point mark for the first time since a 101-65 win over Loyola-New Orleans on Dec. 1, 2015 and the 44th time in school history.

All 11 Lions who saw action scored as Southeastern shot 58 percent from the field. Junior forward Davon Hayes led the way with a career-high 29 points in just 18 minutes of action, hitting a career-best 7-of-10 3-pointers. Sophomore forward Moses Greenwood went 10-of-12 from the field in tying a career high with 23 points. He added seven rebounds to tie team honors with senior center Dominic Nelson. Junior guard Eddy Polanco added 13 points while sophomore guard Marlain Veal had 12 points, four assists and five steals. Junior guard Jabbar Singleton had a career-high six assists.

Toledo, meanwhile, will be looking to bounce back from a 111-105 overtime loss at Marshall last Saturday. It was the Rockets' fifth overtime game of the season, tops in the country. Senior guard Jonathan Williams had 28 points to go with nine rebounds. Senior forward Steve Taylor Jr. added a career-high 27 points and 10 boards. Sophomore forward Nate Navigato scored a season-high 14 points, while redshirt-freshman center Luke Knapke added 11 points and five rebounds.

"I am really impressed with them on film," Southeastern head coach Jay Ladner said of the Rockets. "They are a very talented team and one I think will compete for the championship of their league. They remind me, in a little different way, as far as all of their players being big and athletic and strong and their ability to score, of Louisiana Tech (an 88-59 loss earlier this season). On the other hand, this is a great opportunity for us. If we are to become a national brand like we want to build here, then we're going to have to start winning some intersectional games on the road. It will be a tough environment, but it's going to be a good experience for us to increase our brand on a national scale and is also one of those tough games that is going to help prepare us for conference play."

The Lions are averaging 77.2 points per game on 47.4 percent shooting - second best in the Southland - and are first in rebounding margin (plus-3.9) and second in total rebounds (367) and. The Lions are also first in the conference and 12th nationally in 3-point percentage (41.6) and lead the league in both free throw attempts (235) and made (166). They are second in assists (155).

Veal is second in the Southland Conference in assists (43) steals (22). Senior center Nelson (5.8 ppg, 7.7 rpg) is second in total rebounds (77) and third in blocks (20) and defensive rebounds per game (5.6).

Greenwood is shooting 62.9 percent from the field, while averaging 11.8 points and 5.9 rebounds with 12 steals. Singleton has dished out 29 assists while averaging 4.5 points.

Polanco or Hayes will be the fifth starter on Saturday. Hayes is averaging 13.1 points and 5.0 rebounds and is fourth in the conference with 21 3-pointers. Polanco is averaging 9.4 points and 4.1 rebounds.

Coming in off the bench are junior guard George Brock (2.8 ppg), sophomore guard Dimi Cook (3.4 ppg, 12 assists) and freshmen guards Chris Mejia (3.4 ppg) and Michael Corchiani (3.1 ppg). Junior forward James Currington saw his first appearance Monday after missing the first nine games with an injury and recorded four points and five rebounds.

Southeastern leads the conference in scoring defense (69.7 ppg) and is second in field goal percentage defense (41.9 percent). The Lions are also second in defensive rebounds per game (26.7).

They are 67.4 percent from the line, ranking 21st nationally in free throw attempted (273) and 35th in free throws made (184). Toledo is out-rebounding opponents by a 3.6 margin, 39.3-35.7.

Williams, a third-team All-Mid-American Conference selection in 2015-16, leads the Rockets with 19.0 points per game. He is also averaging 4.2 rebounds with 25 assists. Taylor, who sat out last season after transferring from Marquette, leads the nation in defensive rebounds per game (10.1) and double-doubles (eight) and is fourth in total rebounds (118) and rebounds per game (11.8).
