Lions Look to Extend Win Streak at Colorado State

FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Southeastern Louisiana will look to extend its win streak to four when the Lions visit Colorado State Friday at 3 p.m. in Moby Arena.

The game will be on the Mountain West Network. It will be broadcast live in the Hammond area on KSLU-FM (90.9), online at www.LionSports.net/listenlive and via the TuneIn Radio app. Live stats, provided by Colorado State, will be accessible on the men's basketball schedule page at www.LionSports.net.

Southeastern (4-1) is off to its best start since the 2010-11 season. The Lions started the 2009-10 season 6-1 and were 5-1 in both 2005-06 and 2007-08, but had to vacate those wins due to NCAA sanctions. The last time Southeastern officially started 5-1 was in 1982-83 when it won six of its first seven games.

The Lions snapped a 19-game non-conference losing streak with a 72-56 win at UTEP on Wednesday. Junior guard Davon Hayes led three Lions in double figures with a career-high 19 points. Sophomore guard Marlain Veal contributed 18 points, a career-best nine rebounds and six assists, while senior center Dominic Nelson had his second double-double of the season with 10 points and 11 rebounds. The Lions shot 48.3 from the field while holding UTEP to 33.9 percent and out-rebounding the Miners, 47-32.

Veal is averaging 19.2 points to go with 27 assists and 11 steals. Sophomore forward Moses Greenwood is averaging 15.0 points and 6.8 rebounds while Hayes is scoring 12.4 points a game. Nelson (7.0 ppg, 8.4 rpg) is the team's leader in blocks (14) after getting four on Wednesday. The Lions are averaging 81.2 points per game on 53.1 percent shooting and are plus-10.2 in rebounding margin.

Defensively, Southeastern is allowing opponents 66.2 points a contest on 40.3 percent shooting and have forced 78 turnovers, 32 coming on steals.

Veal, Nelson, Greenwood, Hayes and junior guard Jabbar Singleton (4.8 ppg, 19 assists) will be the Lions' starters on Friday. Coming off the bench will be junior guards Eddy Polanco (5.4 ppg) and George Brock (1.4 ppg), sophomore guard Dimi Cook (2.0 ppg) and freshmen guards Chris Mejia (4.6 ppg) and Michael Corchiani (0.6 ppg).

Colorado State (3-1) returns five letterwinners and one starter from the 2015-16 squad that went 18-16 overall and finished tied for fifth in the Mountain West Conference with an 8-10 record. The Rams advanced to the semifinals of the conference tournament.

Larry Eustachy is in his fifth season as head coach at Colorado State and his 26th as a Division I head coach.

Returning for the Rams is senior forward Emmanuel Omogbo, an honorable mention all-MWC selection in 2015-16. Omogbo leads CSU in rebounding (10.8 rpg) while ranking second in scoring (12.0 ppg).

Junior forward Che Bob has come off the bench to average 12.8 points and 8.8 rebounds and grab a team-high seven steals. Sophomore guard Prentiss Nixon is also in double figures with 10.0 points per game. Sophomore guard J.D. Paige (8.8 ppg, 16 assists) and sophomore forward/center Braden Koelliker (7.5 ppg, 6.0 rpg) join Omogbo and Nixon in starting all four games. Freshman forward Nico Carvacho (5.8 ppg, 4.0 rpg) and junior forward Kimani Jackson (5.5 ppg) have also gotten starts.

Colorado State is averaging 68.2 points on 39.7 percent shooting. The Rams have allowed 64.2 points on 38.4 shooting and have out-rebounded opponents by a 8.5 margin (42.2-33.8).

Colorado State is coming off a 76-65 win over Maryland Eastern Shore Wednesday to start a three-game homestand. Bob (14 points, 10 rebounds) and Omogbo (11 points, 10 rebounds) both had double-doubles. Paige (13 points, 5 assists) and junior Devocio Butler (10 points) were also in double figures for the Rams who shot 52.7 percent from the field.

"Colorado State is very good and they have one of the great coaches in the country in Larry Eustachy," Southeastern head coach Jay Ladner said. "He's famous for is man-to-man defense and they rebound the ball so we're going to have to be ready to go. We have to get our guys ready and regrouped and trained up. We have a few of them banged up, but we're going to get it going."

Friday's game will be the first meeting between Southeastern and Colorado State.  The Rams will also be the first team from the state of Colorado the Lions have played.
Southeastern wraps up its three-game road trip at California Sunday at 7 p.m.
