Southeastern head coach
Jay Ladner said Tulane, which is coming off a 95-75 loss to sixth-ranked North Carolina on Friday, will be a different challenge than what the Lions have faced. Southeastern has taken exhibition wins over Southern-New Orleans and LSU-Alexandria in addition to the season opener against Millsaps.
"Tulane is a whole different animal than what we've played," Ladner said. "They are going to be big and they are going to be hungry to beat us. They're a high-major basketball team with a lot of good players. We're going to have to be better in every facet of the game to be successful. We'll have our hands full Monday night but we're also looking forward to the challenge."
Southeastern never trailed against Millsaps in tying the 10th-biggest margin of victory in school history. The Lions won their eighth straight home game dating back to last season while snapping a five-game losing streak in season openers. Southeastern also picked up its 10
th-straight win in home openers.
The 39 points scored by Millsaps were the fewest points the Lions have allowed since a 54-33 win over Stephen F. Austin on Feb. 5, 2004. They also tied for the fifth fewest points allowed by Southeastern in its history and it was only the sixth time the Lions have allowed fewer than 40 points in a game. It was also the first time Southeastern held an opponent under 50 points since a 45-40 loss at North Texas on Dec. 16, 2012.
The Lions held the Majors to 31.4 percent (16-of-51) shooting from the floor, out-rebounded them 46-22 and forced 19 turnovers.
Offensively, Southeastern shot 55.4 percent (31-of-56) from the field and had two players with double-doubles for the first time since the final game of the 2014-15 season. Senior forward
Jordan Capps had 26 points on 11-of-12 shooting from the field while pulling down 15 rebounds. Sophomore forward
Moses Greenwood was 7-of-10 from the field and 8-of-10 from the line in scoring a career-high 22 points. He also grabbed 10 rebounds and three steals.
Sophomore guard
Marlain Veal was also in double figures with 14 points while joining junior guards
Jabbar Singleton and
George Brock with four assists. Senior center
Dominic Nelson contributed nine rebounds and two blocks.
Veal, Singleton and junior
Davon Hayes are expected to again start at guard with Capps at forward and Nelson at center. Coming off the bench will be redshirt junior forward
James Currington; sophomore guard
Dimi Cook; sophomore forward
Moses Greenwood; junior guards
Eddy Polanco and
George Brock; freshman forward
Brandon Gonzalez; and freshmen guards
Chris Mejia and
Michael Corchiani.
Tulane came into the season with eight letterwinners and four starters back from a club that went 12-22 overall and finished 11
th in the American Athletic Conference with a 3-15 mark in 2015-16. Mike Dunleavy, Sr., who coached 17 seasons in the NBA, is in his first season as head coach of the Green Wave.
Expected to start for Tulane are redshirt junior Cameron Reynolds, redshirt senior Malik Morgan, sophomore Melvin Frazier and freshman Colin Slater at the guards and senior Ryan Smith at center. Reynolds had a career-high 21 points against North Carolina while Slater added 14 in his collegiate debut. Sophomore guard Kain Harris came off the bench to score 15. Smith had a team-high eight rebounds, tying his career high.
Southeastern and Tulane will be meeting for just the third time since the 1997-98 season and the 11th time overall. The Green Wave hold an 8-2 lead in the series that dates back to the 1949-50 season. Tulane captured the last meeting, 71-61, in New Orleans on Nov. 28, 2014. Southeastern's last win in the series was on Dec. 20, 2003, a 66-63 victory in New Orleans.
"We really need to clean up some offensive sets and patterns and what we are doing in the halfcourt before we play Tulane," Ladner said of the keys for the Lions. "Tulane is going to be bigger and stronger than anybody we've played. They have a new coach, Mike Dunleavy, who has been in the NBA for many years and they do a lot of NBA-type stuff. They have a lot of good players and they have a lot of players that we've recruited. It's an important game for us in that sense, that we recruit New Orleans very hard and they recruit New Orleans very hard. It helps us out in terms of recruiting if we can go there and have a chance to be successful."
Southeastern returns home Wednesday to play Jackson State at 7:30 p.m. in the University Center.
