UCA Rallies Past Lady Lions

CONWAY, Ark. – Southeastern Louisiana took a first-half lead but Central Arkansas rallied for a 3-2 Southland Conference victory Friday evening.

Senior Casey Peacock scored her fourth goal of the season and sophomore Vanessa Arzaluz her second as the Lady Lions (6-9-2, 3-5-1) took a 2-1 lead in the first half. Senior Hope Sabadash made seven saves.

Sophomore Camille Bassett scored her league-leading 13th goal of the season in the 46th minute to give conference front-runner Central Arkansas (13-3-1, 8-0-1) the victory. Junior Dayna Mounie scored her sixth goal of the year and added an assist on senior's Chele Naudin's second in the first half. Sophomore Ashley Smith assisted on Mounie's goal. Junior Anna Hughes made three saves while sophomore Lauren Mercuri made one in recording a scoreless second half.

"It was a great match," Southeastern interim head coach Matt Muia said. "We came out and gave up a goal early, but we rebounded and went ahead 2-1. We were playing with them in the second half and they ended up getting one on us. But it was a great game for our girls and a great showing of heart for our girls and I couldn't be more proud of them after tonight."

With the match tied at 2 at the half, Central Arkansas quickly went ahead to start the second half as Bassett dribbled for 30 yards before beating Sabadash to the lower left corner.

UCA kept up the pressure as Sabadash saved a shot by Bassett before Smith sent a header wide in the 50th minute.

Southeastern put on a flurry of shots over the next six minutes as junior Maddie Kresevic missed high and Peacock sent one wide before freshman Ylva Svendsen had a shot blocked. Svendsen then sent a shot wide in the 56th minute. Sabadash came back with a save against Bassett before making another one against Naudin in the 65th minute.

UCA continued to control the ball as Sabadash saved a shot by senior Allie Coleman in the 68th minute. Freshman Jordan Slim sent a rebound wide after Naudin had a shot blocked in the 73rd minute. Sabadash collected another save against senior Shelby Wilson in the 79th minute.

Southeastern threatened in the 85th minute as freshman Amber Marinero had her shot saved by Mercuri, then sent another attempt high. A corner kick by junior Lauren Babcock was cleared out in the 87th minute.

Central Arkansas jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the fifth minute when Mounie took a pass from Smith and sent a shot into the left side of the net from 10 yards out.

Wilson missed high on an attempt in the eighth minute. Southeastern then went on the offensive with sophomore Sofia Olsson sending in a header that was saved by Hughes. Kresevic then sent a shot wide off a corner by Babcock in the 12th minute. The Bears countered with Sabadash saving an attempt by Mounie.

After Olsson missed wide, Southeastern tied the match in the 15th minute when Peacock dribbled to the top of the box and angled a shot into the top left corner of the net.

The Lady Lions went ahead in the 22nd minute as Arzaluz scored on a shot from the top of the box.

Svendsen had a header saved by Hughes, then sent a shot wide in the 32nd minute. Naudin and Mounie sent shots high in the 36th minute. Hughes stopped another attempt by Olsson in the 38th minute.

Central Arkansas tied it at 2 in the 39th minute when Bassett scored from 3 yards out off a pass from Naudin.

Sabadash saved a shot by Coleman less than a minute later. Wilson then missed high in the 40th minute.

Southeastern will play its final road match of the season when the Lady Lions travel to Northwestern State on Sunday for a 1 p.m. match. Live stats, provided by Northwestern State, will be accessible on the Southeastern women's soccer schedule page at www.LionSports.net.

"We're going to have to come ready to play with the same intensity that we brought tonight," Muia said. "We'll have to go after them and get some points on the road."
