Second-Half Goals Send Northwestern St. Past Lady Lions

NATCHITOCHES, La. – Southeastern Louisiana had scoring opportunities in the first half but could not convert in a 4-0 Southland Conference loss at Northwestern State Sunday afternoon.

Northwestern State (10-6-1, 7-2-1) scored all four of its goals in the second half to hand the Lady Lions (6-10-2, 3-6-1) their third straight loss.

Senior Casey Peacock took five shots, three on goal, for Southeastern. Sophomore Sofia Olsson took four shots and freshman Linda Karlsson three. Senior Hope Sabadash made seven saves.

Junior Cache' Haley scored a pair of goals and freshman April Trowbridge and sophomore April Ficarrotta one each for Northwestern State. Trowbridge also had an assist, along with junior Esdeina Gonzalez, freshman Andrea Rodriguez Flores, sophomore Brittany Caserma and junior Chandler Monk. Junior Alex Latham made five saves for her seventh shutout of the season.

"We have to tip our hat to Northwestern State today," Southeastern interim head coach Matt Muia said. "They gave us a great game and they found ways to finish their chances in the second half. Our defense just wasn't good enough today and we couldn't find a way to stop them."

Northwestern State broke open a scoreless match early in the second as Haley scored off a pass from Trowbridge in the 47th minute.

After sophomore Christina Cutura missed wide and Peacock high on shots for Southeastern, Rodriguez passed to Gonzalez. Gonzalez then crossed to the left side to Haley who converted for her second goal of the match and fifth of the season for a 2-0 lead in the 54th minute.

Sabadash saved another attempt by Haley in the 59th minute. Olsson came back for Southeastern with a shot that went wide in the 61st minute. Latham saved a shot by Peacock before Karlsson missed wide in the 64th minute. Olsson had a shot blocked in the 68th minute.

The Lady Demons made it 3-0 in the 81st minute as Trowbridge scored her sixth goal of the season off a cross from Caserma.

Latham saved a shot by Peacock before the Northwestern State defense blocked a shot by Olsson in the 84th minute to preserve the shutout.

Ficarrotta scored from the left wing off a cross from Monk to close out the scoring in the 89th minute.

Latham saved a shot by Olsson before Sabadash did likewise versus Haley in the sixth minute. Junior Maddie Kresevic had her shot carom off the crossbar in the 10th minute before Latham stopped an attempt by Peacock two minutes later. Senior Lauren Lorentz then missed high in the 13th minute.

Northwestern State went on the offensive with Sabadash denying an attempt by Haley in the 14th minute. Trowbridge then had her shot blocked by the Southeastern defense following a corner by junior Amy Renteria.

After Southeastern regained possession, Karlsson had a shot saved by Latham, then hit the crossbar on the rebound in the 18th minute. Peacock got the deflection but shot wide.

Haley hit the post in the 22nd minute, then had an attempt stopped by Sabadash in the 29th minute. Sabadash saved Gonzalez's shot in the 36th minute before freshman Jayden Wheeler missed wide in the 41st minute. Sabadash collected another save against sophomore Cayla Klinger a minute later.

Southeastern will close out the regular season at home against Nicholls Friday at 7 p.m. in Strawberry Stadium. Seniors Lorentz, Peacock, Sabadash, Casey Jeanfreau, Amber Lasher, Katie Noonan and Marisa Rodrigues will be recognized before the match.
