Sabadash Sets Saves Record in Lady Lions’ OT Win

HAMMOND, La. – On a day Southeastern Louisiana senior Hope Sabadash set the school career record for saves, it was only appropriate the Lady Lions emerged victorious in a defensive struggle.

Junior Maddie Kresevic converted a penalty kick in the third minute of overtime to give Southeastern a 1-0 Southland Conference victory over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Sunday at Strawberry Stadium.

"We challenged the team today to find a way to win and get back on track for this year," said Southeastern interim head coach Matt Muia, whose squad broke a three-match losing streak.

"They made a mistake and we found a way to win. "It was a true team effort today, especially on the back line. We had multiple people playing multiple positions and some players playing in a position for the first time. So it was a true team effort today and we're really proud of the girls."

Sabadash made nine saves, giving her 359 for her career and breaking the previous mark of 351 set by Allison Holladay from 1997-99.

"It's an honor to be here and to be able to play as many games as I have been and to be able to come up for my team," Sabadash said. "I wasn't really focused on records. It was, let's get out with a win so we can keep rolling into next week. I always give credit to my defense. I wouldn't be here if they weren't there."

Muia said the record crowns an already outstanding career for Sabadash.

"I think it's a good record for her and her career," Muia said. "Being an All-American and all-region player and what she brings to the program, she deserves to have a few school records."

Kresevic scored her second goal of the season for the Lady Lions (5-7-1, 2-3-0). Freshman Ylva Svendsen had a match-high six shots, two on goal, while sophomore Sofia Olsson added four shots as Southeastern out-shot the Islanders 19-13.

A&M-Corpus Christi (0-12-0, 0-5-0) got four shots from senior Yvette Franco and three from freshman Shayla Spearman. Junior Jordan Wainwright recorded seven saves.

Southeastern broke the stalemate in the third minute after TAMCC was called for a handball on a free kick by junior Lauren Babcock into the box. Kresevic took the penalty kick, beating Wainwright to the right side of the net.

Sabadash tied the saves record with a stop against freshman Shayla Spearman in the 15th minute, then made a diving stop of a shot by sophomore Kaitlyn Joy in the 34th minute. Sophomore Christina Remmes hit the crossbar in the 44th minute.

Southeastern also had opportunities in the first half as Wainwright stopped attempts by Olsson, senior Casey Peacock and junior Kim Porche. Sophomore Payton Colson, Svendsen and freshman Caroline Lee also missed wide on shots.

Svendsen missed high on a shot in the 50th minute, then had a shot slid away by Wainwright in the 54th minute. Sabadash saved shots by junior Brooke Erdmann and Franco before Wainwright denied an attempt by Svendsen in the 65th minute.

Sabadash dove to her left to punch away a shot by Spearman in the 69th minute. Peacock missed high after taking a cross from Kresevic in the 73rd minute. After Sabadash grabbed a shot by senior Emma Biba on the short hop in the 85th minute, Colson hit the side of the net from the right wing in the 87th minute.

Sabadash leapt to deflect away a shot by Franco in the 87th minute. Wainwright stopped a shot by Olsson in the final minute. Olsson missed wide in the final seconds.

Sabadash saved a shot by senior Kallyn Redona early in the third minute of the extra period.

Southeastern travels to Lamar Friday for a 7 p.m. contest.
