HOUSTON, Texas – Southeastern Louisiana dropped a Southland Conference contest Saturday, 77-58, to Houston Baptist at Sharp Gym.
Anthony Odunsi laid the ball in the hoop 35 seconds in, giving HBU (8-7, 3-0 Southland) a lead it would hold the remainder of the game. The closest Southeastern (2-13, 0-2 Southland) would come to catching the Huskies, 5-4, came on a pair of
JaMichael Hawkins free throws at the 18:00 mark of the first half.
HBU led, 43-24, at the half.
The Lions closed within eight, 65-57, at the 2:53 mark of the second half on a pair of free throws by
Dominic Nelson, but down the stretch HBU extended its lead back to 19 points.
Zay Jackson led all players with 21 points and Hawkins joined him in double figures with 14 points for the Lions.
Jordan Capps, a junior from Norcross, Georgia, hauled in a game-high 12 rebounds.
Southeastern shot 31.7 percent (19-of-60) from the floor, including 32 percent (8-of-25) from 3-point range. The Lions were 12-of-21 (57.1 percent) from the free throw line.
Odunsi led HBU with 18 points and eight assists. Josh Ibarra (13) and Reveal Chukwujekwu (12) also scored in double digits for the Huskies. Alex Fountain led the squad with nine rebounds.
HBU shot 45.3 percent (24-of-53) from the floor, including 36.8 percent (7-of-19) from 3-point range. The Huskies were 22-of-33 (73.3 percent) from the free throw line and out-rebounded Southeastern, 44-40.
Tipoff for the Lions' game Monday against Sam Houston State (8-8, 3-0 Southland) is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at Johnson Coliseum in Huntsville, Texas. The Bearkats topped the University of New Orleans, 73-70, Saturday in conference action.
