HUNTSVILLE, Texas – Southeastern Louisiana's upset bid came up short at Sam Houston State, falling 70-63 in Southland Conference play Monday at Johnson Coliseum.
Southeastern (2-14, 0-3 Southland), which was tied 31-31 at the half with the Bearkats, led Sam Houston (9-8, 4-0 Southland) as late as the 7:14 mark of the second half.
Down, 42-39, with 14:11 remaining in the contest the Lions went on a 12-3 run, capped by layup and free throw by Mo Greenwood at the 10:21 mark, to go up 51-45 over Sam Houston. The Bearkats would grab the lead back on a Aurimas Majauskas layup with 6:34 left to play in regulation.
Southeastern tied the game, 57-57, with 3:59 remaining on a layup by
Jordan Capps, but the Bearkats doubled up on the Lions down the stretch.
Greenwood, a freshman from Sharon, Mississippi, led the Lions with 16 points.
Zay Jackson, a senior from Hammond, Louisiana, scored 15 points and grabbed a team-high seven rebounds before fouling out. Capps, a junior from Norcross, Georgia, added 14 points to the offensive effort.
Southeastern shot 48.1 percent (25-of-52) from the floor, including 26.3 percent (5-of-19) from 3-point range. The Lions converted 8-of-17 (47.1 percent) from the free throw line.
Majauskas turned in a double-double performance, leading the Bearkats with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Dakarai Henderson chipped in 12 points.
Sam Houston shot 45.3 percent (24-of-53) from the floor, including 33.3 percent (9-of-27) from 3-point range. The Bearkats were 13-of-19 (68.4 percent) from the free throw line and out-rebounded Southeastern, 33-30.
The Lions return home for a pair of Southland contests at the University Center, hosting Incarnate Word in the second game of a doubleheader Saturday at 4 p.m. and Lamar at 7 p.m. Monday.
