Lady Lions Bring About Fall Of Troy

SLU picks up four-set win

HAMMOND, La. – A balanced Southeastern Louisiana attack held off Troy Monday at the University Center, snapping the Trojans' winning streak with a four-set victory, 25-22, 25-23, 16-25, 25-17.

Southeastern (2-4) clawed out a pair of close sets to open the match and then ran away with the final set down the stretch to end Troy's (5-3) four-match streak.

The Lady Lions fell behind by three to open the match, but tied up the match, 4-4, on a kill by Rachael Bunn. Following an attack error by Troy on the next play, Southeastern jumped out in front for good in the opening set.

In the second set, Southeastern rallied from an early six-point deficit. Down 12-6, the Lady Lions would claw back to eventually tie the set, 21-21, on a Trojan attack error. Following a Troy time out, back-to-back kills by Tiffany Thomas and Parrie Hartley gave Southeastern the lead. Hartley would end the set with another kill.

Troy responded by jumping out to an 11-4 lead in the third set, fending off the Lady Lions to claim its only set. Southeastern built a seven-point lead, 17-10, in the fourth and final set on a Madi Odom service ace, and finished off the match with a Sarah Friedman kill.

Hartley led all players with 17 kills. Thomas contributed nine and Freidman added eight kills for the Lady Lions. Mikayla Shippy handed out 20 assists and Haley Baker dished out an additional 14 in addition to a career-high five service aces.

Senior Brooke Balser tied a career high with 23 digs, leading all players. Monica Ramon recorded 11 digs and Shippy chipped in nine more for Southeastern. Thomas had a hand in four of the six team blocks.

Darby Griff's nine kills led the Trojan offensive attack. Reina Terry (21 assists) and Alisha Hinrichs (13 assists) split setting duties. Libero Ali Dowdall recorded 21 digs and Leah Causey contributed an another 13. Griff was in on six of Troy's match-high 10 team blocks.

Southeastern returns to the road for its next matches, heading out west to Las Vegas, Nevada, to participate in UNLV's Rebel Challenge.
