HAMMOND, La. – Southeastern Louisiana fought through three tough sets Sunday against Eastern Washington, but the Eagles pulled away in the fourth set to win the match at the University Center, 25-22, 20-25, 25-23, 25-15.
The Lady Lions (1-4) recorded their second-best attack percentage (.227) of the season, out-hitting Eastern Washington (4-3) in the match (.217).
Southeastern fell behind by three early in the first set, but came back to tie up the score at 10-10 on a kill by
Madi Odom. The lead would change hands another three times before the Eagles came out on top in the opening set.
The Lady Lions fell behind early in the second set, but the rally proved successful.
Haley Baker tied the score, 7-7, on a service ace. The lead bounced back-and-forth one more time before Southeastern took the lead for good, 12-11, on a kill by
Landry Bullock.
Falling behind by as much as six points in the the third set, the Lady Lions rallied within one point late. A kill by
Sarah Friedman brought Southeastern within 21-20 of Eastern Washington and then back-to-back attack errors by the Eagles tied the score, 23-23. Eastern Washington pulled out the set and claimed the fourth for the match.
Tiffany Thomas posted double-digit kills for the first time this season, recording 15 to lead the Lady Lion offense. Bullock added an additional 13 kills.
Mikayla Shippy turned in the ninth double-double performance of her career, dishing out 27 assists and picking up a team-high 13 digs.
Baker handed out another 20 assists and served up three of Southeastern's four aces in the match.
Brooke Balser (12),
Madi Odom (11) and
Monica Ramon (10) all recorded double-digit digs.
Rachael Bunn tallied a pair of solo blocks for the Lady Lions.
Allie Schumacher recorded a double-double, leading Eastern Washington in both kills (12) and digs (19). Nicole Rigoni handed out 26 assists while Tilbe Yaglioglu dished out another 15 for the Eagles. Libero Fernanda Vido chipped in 18 digs.
Southeastern hosts Troy (5-2) at noon on Labor Day. Admission, as it will be for all home volleyball matches this season, is free.
