HOUSTON, Texas – The Southeastern Louisiana volleyball team knocked off Houston Baptist, 25-22, 21-25, 25-17, 25-17, Saturday at Sharp Gym to even its Southland Conference record.
Led by several Texas natives, Southeastern (7-8, 1-1 Southland) bounced back from a loss in its conference opener at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi to defeat the Huskies (8-8, 1-1 Southland).
Madi Odom, a junior from Kingwood, Texas, recorded half of her double-digit kill total in the first set, including the first point of the match.
The Lady Lions trailed just once in the initial set, 2-1, but back-to-back kills from Houston native
Sarah Friedman quickly wiped out the deficit.
Friedman led the Southeastern offense in the second set, but the Lady Lions could not overcome a dominant performance by HBU's Jessica Wooten (seven kills and 10 digs) in dropping their only set of the contest.
Landry Bullock, a junior from Spring, Texas, took charge in the final two sets, contributing 10 of her 13 kills to close out the match.
Friedman (14), Bullock (13), Odom (12) and
Parrie Hartley (10), a junior from Columbus, Texas, all recorded double-digit kills.
Mikayla Shippy (23 assists) and
Haley Baker (21 assists) split setting duties.
Veronica Turk, a senior from Pearland, Texas, had a hand in five of the Lady Lions' seven blocks.
Brooke Balser posted 13 digs and Odom contributed another 11 for her first double-double performance of the season.
Wooten led all players with 15 kills and 15 digs while Kayla Armer handed out 29 assists and chipped in 10 digs, both posting a double-double for the Huskies. Blair Gillard had a hand in nine of the team's 14 blocks.
