HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southeastern Louisiana volleyball dropped a tough, four-set decision Tuesday at Southern Miss, 26-24, 23-25, 25-16, 25-19.
Clawing through the first two sets, Southeastern (1-3) and Southern Miss (4-0) were tied at one set apiece.
Down by five in the first set the Lady Lions used an 11-3 run to take a 23-20 lead, but attack errors pushed Southern Miss back in front.
In the second, Southeastern never led by more than three points in another tightly-contested set.
Sarah Friedman helped even the match, nailing down a pair of kills to finish off the set.
Landry Bullock again led Southeastern's offense, racking up 16 kills for the second-consecutive match. Friedman recorded nine while both
Tiffany Thomas and
Veronica Turk chipped in eight kills each. Freshman
Haley Baker handed out a career-high 24 assists and
Mikayla Shippy dished out another 20 to aid the Lady Lion offensive effort.
Freshman
Monica Ramon posted a career-high 17 digs to lead the Southeastern defense. Thomas added 15 while
Brooke Balser and
Madi Odom contributed nine digs apiece. Turk recorded three block assists while Bullock, Shippy and Thomas each posted solo blocks.
Seven team blocks is the most this season by the Lady Lions.
Stephany Purdue's 25 kills led all players. Kylie Grandy (12 kills, 17 digs) and Sarah Bell (43 assists, 10 digs) joined Purdue (11 digs), turning in double-double performances for Southern Miss. Mary Pursell's 29 digs were a match high. Elise Ames had a hand in five of the Golden Eagles' 11 team blocks.
Southeastern returns to the University Center to host Eastern Washington, Sunday at 2 p.m., and Troy, Monday at 12 p.m., in a pair of Labor Day weekend matches.
