HAMMOND – Southeastern Louisiana senior defensive back
Harlan Miller added to his growing list of preseason accolades on Tuesday, when the College Sporting News named its 2015 Preseason Fabulous Fifty FCS All-America Team.
The preseason All-America nod is the second for Miller, who was named to the STATS Preseason All-America squad as a first team selection this month. The Kentwood, Louisiana native is also a member of the STATS FCS Defensive Player of the Year watch list and was a preseason first team All-Southland Conference selection.
Miller is part of a veteran secondary that returns after helping the Lions lead the nation in pass efficiency defense a season ago. Miller is one of four preseason all-league defensive backs on the SLU roster, along with fellow seniors
Denzel Thompson,
Micah Eugene and
Jordan Batiste. SLU also returns key veterans
JQ Sandolph,
Josh Dakin,
Derrick Raymond and
Ryan Sigers in the secondary.
Miller spent his sophomore and junior campaigns establishing himself as one of the nation's premier cover corners. The two-time first team All-Southland selection had seven interceptions in 2013 and 2014, helping Southeastern to consecutive Southland championships and FCS playoff appearances.
Miller was one of four Southland Conference student-athletes on the list. He was joined by Northwestern State senior wide receiver/kick returner Ed Eagan, Sam Houston State senior offensive tackle Donald Jackson III and Central Arkansas senior defensive end Jonathan Woodard.
The CSN honor's squad is designed to be like a real team, capable of taking the field and competing in a game. It includes everything from quarterbacks, who can run or pass and often-overlooked fullbacks, to long snappers and other special team performers. The Fabulous Fifty also emphasizes players who have exhibited character and other team-oriented traits, not just lofty statistics, or talent.
After the national championship game on January 9th in Frisco, Texas, the year-end Fab 50 team will be announced including the three major awards for top coach, offensive and defensive players named in honor of the FCS legends Coach Roy Kidd, Adrian "AP" Peterson and James "Boomer" Grigsby respectively. Other major awards will also be announced for Offensive Lineman of the Year, Special Teams Player of the Year, Freshmen of the Year, and Playoff Most Valuable Player.
Miller and the Lions are in the midst of the first week of fall practice, as SLU prepares from its season opener at Northwestern State on Sept. 3. The Lions open their home schedule versus Florida Tech on Sept. 12. Season tickets can be purchased by contacting the Southeastern Athletics Ticket Office at (985) 549-5466.
