Lions Look To Wrap Up Southland Title Against New Orleans

Southeastern's magic number is one over Northwestern State

NEW ORLEANS, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana baseball team wraps up the 2015 regular season this weekend with a three-game Southland Conference series against the University of New Orleans. The split series will be played Thursday (6:30 p.m.) and Saturday (1 p.m.) in New Orleans, and Friday (6 p.m.) in Hammond, Louisiana.

The teams will be competing for the inaugural Pontchartrain Bowl trophy, sponsored by Southeastern's chapter of Sigma Tau Gamma fraternity.

Southeastern's magic number to clinch the conference regular-season title sits at one. One win by the Lions (38-15, 22-5 Southland), or loss by Northwestern State (29-19, 19-7 Southland), and Southeastern will clinch its first Southland regular-season championship.

Friday's game at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field against the Privateers (14-37, 3-24 Southland) is a $5 Friday contest. All adult general admission tickets are only $5. Along with the reduced ticket price, the concession stand will offer a combo special for $5.

The middle game of the series is also Southeastern's Senior Day. Senior players Kevin Carr, Brett Hoffman, Kyle Keller and Jacob Williams, as well as equipment manager Zack Shickel, will be honored prior to Friday's game.

All three games can be heard in the Hammond area on KSLU 90.9 FM, online and through either the KSLU or TuneIn Radio smartphone apps. Fans can also keep up with the action through live statistics or by following @SLUathletics on Twitter. Streaming video is available for all three games with Friday's contest on LionVision, Southeastern's subscription-based video stream.

Links for audio, video, stats, tickets and promotions are available on the baseball schedule page at www.LionSports.net.

Jacob Seward (.370), Carr (.340), Kennon Menard (.326), Hoffman (.311), Daniel Midyett (.311) and Carson Crites (.308) lead Southeastern at the plate. Seward tops the Southland in hits (74) and runs scored (46). Midyett leads the squad with eight home runs and 41 RBIs. Seward leads the team with 17 stolen bases.

Hoffman is second all-time in games played at Southeastern (227), eighth in hits (200) and ninth in doubles (36).

The Lions are hitting a conference-best .305 as a team and have been successful on 82-of-108 stolen base attempts, also tops in the conference. The pitching staff has compiled a 3.41 ERA, second-lowest in the Southland, fanning a conference-leading 432 batters in 466.2 innings pitched.

Tate Scioneaux (8-2, 2.96), a junior right-hander from Reserve, Louisiana, draws the series opening nod for Southeastern. He is the only starting pitcher confirmed for the series by either team.

The junior from Reserve, Louisiana, owns 22 career victories, tying former teammate Jordan Hymel for fifth on Southeastern's all-time wins list. He is also fifth in career strikeouts (248) and moved into a tie with Bob Hardy for the second-most career innings pitched as a Lion (301.1).

Ryan Calloway (.342) and Jonathan Coco (.314) lead UNO at the plate. Chaz Boyer and Jonathan Santana have each hit a pair of homers to lead the Privateers. Boyer's 24 RBIs are tops on the squad. Calloway owns a team-high nine stolen bases.
