Lions Travel To Houston Baptist For Key Southland Series

Conference-leading Southeastern up by two on Huskies

HOUSTON, Texas – The Southeastern Louisiana baseball team travels to Houston Baptist for a key Southland Conference series this weekend at Husky Field.

Southeastern (30-12, 14-4 Southland) and HBU (21-17, 12-6 Southland) are now slated to play a doubleheader Friday starting at 12 p.m. and a single game Saturday at 1 p.m. The conference-leading Lions enter the series one game in front of Northwestern State and two games in front of HBU.

All three games can be heard in the Hammond area on KSLU 90.9 FM, online and through either the KSLU or TuneIn Radio smartphone apps. Fans can also keep up with the action through live statistics or by following @SLUathletics on Twitter. Streaming video is available courtesy HBU. Links for audio, video and stats are available on the baseball schedule page at www.LionSports.net.

Southeastern had its four-game winning streak snapped by the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, 7-2, this past Tuesday.

Jacob Seward (.355), Kevin Carr (.340), Daniel Midyett (.333) and Brett Hoffman (.322) lead Southeastern at the plate. Seward's batting average is the third-highest in the Southland, has scored a conference-leading 37 runs and is tied with Ryan Byers for the team lead in stolen bases (12). Midyett's seven home runs and 36 RBIs lead the conference as well.

The Lions are hitting a conference-best .301 as a team and have been successful on 64-of-89 stolen base attempts, also tops in the conference. The pitching staff has compiled a 3.75 ERA, fanning a Southland-leading 350 batters in 370 innings pitched.

Tate Scioneaux (5-2, 3.82), a junior right-hander from Reserve, Louisiana, draws the series opening nod for Southeastern. He matches up with southpaw Matthew McCullough (7-1, 2.84) for the Huskies.

The Lions will send junior right-hander Jake Johnson (6-1, 3.14) to the mound in the second game of the doubleheader against HBU righty Taylor Wright (6-4, 2.77). Johnson defeated the Huskies, 10-4, in a non-conference game at the UTA Hilton Invitational back on Feb. 21, scattering three hits over seven innings.

Southpaw Kyle Cedotal (5-2, 1.75), a junior from Denham Springs, Louisiana, draws the starting nod for Southeastern in Saturday's series finale against Husky right-hander Curtis Jones (4-4, 2.74).

Southland-leading hitter Zach Nehrir (.366), Louie Payetta (.320) and Samm Wiggins are HBU's top hitters. Wiggins leads the team with 12 doubles and four home runs. Nehrir owns a team-best 32 RBIs and Thomas Clay's eight stolen bases are tops on the squad.

The Huskies are hitting .288 as a team and have been successful on 23-of-37 stolen base attempts. The pitching staff has compiled a 3.07 ERA, fanning 210 batters in 331.2 innings of work.

HBU dropped a 5-2 decision Tuesday in a crosstown matchup with Texas Southern.

Southeastern wraps up its regular-season series with Tulane at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in New Orleans, Louisiana. The game will be televised regionally by Cox Sports TV.
