Johnson's Gem Carries Lions To Doubleheader Split At UIW

Southeastern starting pitcher masterful on Saturday

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Southeastern Louisiana starting pitchers Jake Johnson and Kyle Cedotal kept Incarnate Word hitters off balance for 16 innings Saturday as the Lions split a Southland Conference doubleheader at Sullivan Field.

Southeastern (12-5, 2-1 Southland) cruised through the first game behind Johnson's right arm and then staked itself to a 10-0 lead in the second game before UIW (7-9, 1-2 Southland) rallied for an 11-10 victory, salvaging the final game of the series.

UIW snapped the Lions' six-game winning streak and averted a sweep, scoring 10 runs in the final 1.1 innings off the Southeastern bullpen.

Southeastern returns to action Tuesday at 6 p.m. against South Alabama in Mobile, Alabama.

Game One - Southeastern La. 4, Incarnate Word 1

Johnson (3-0) was masterful in the opening game of the doubleheader, limiting UIW to an unearned run on a pair of singles. The junior right-hander from Salina, Oklahoma, walked a pair and struck out 10 in a complete game effort.

Southeastern scored single runs in the second and fifth innings.

Ryan Byers led off the second with a single through the right side and the stole second base. He advanced to third on Chris Eades' one-out, infield single. Brooks Morse plated Byers with a single through the left side.

Daniel Midyett drew a walk to open the fifth. After stealing second base, he scored on Carson Crites' one-out double to left field.

Midyett staked the Lions to a 4-0 lead in the seventh. After Julian Service tripled to chase UIW starter Brandon Anderson (1-1), Midyett greeted reliever Chris Jones with a 2-run home run to left field. It was Midyett's third of the season.

Johnson surrendered a single to Mark Whitehead, leading off the bottom of the first and then did not yield another hit until Austin Hoffman's one-out single in the seventh. At one point, he retired 11-consecutive batters en route to earning the win. Anderson was tagged with the loss.

Midyett finished the game 3-for-4 with a walk, two runs scored and a pair of RBIs. Morse also turned in a multi-hit performance, going 2-for-4 at the plate with an RBI.

The Lions scored three runs in the third, one in the fourth, two in the fifth and four more in the seventh.

Up 10-0 heading into the bottom of the seventh, Southeastern was one out from a run-rule victory, for a sweep of the Cardinals, when right fielder Blake Woosley tripled in Trey Rodriguez with UIW's first run of the game.

The Cardinals scored 10 runs off the Southeastern bullpen over the final 1.1 innings, aided by a combination of seven Lion wild pitches and passed balls.
