Gulf Weather Forces Change In Lions' Series At Texas A&M-Corpus Christi

Teams to play doubleheader Friday, single game Saturday

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The Southeastern Louisiana baseball squad opens a three-game, Southland Conference series with a doubleheader against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Friday at 3 p.m. at Chapman Field.

Southeastern (16-7, 4-2 Southland) and the Islanders (10-7, 2-1 Southland) will wrap up the series Saturday at 3 p.m. The Lions, who own the most overall wins in the conference, sit two games behind first-place Central Arkansas.

All three games can be heard in the Hammond area on KSLU 90.9 FM, online and through either the KSLU or TuneIn Radio smartphone apps. Fans can also keep up with the action through live statistics or by following @SLUathletics on Twitter. Streaming video will be provided by A&M-Corpus Christi. Links for audio, video and stats are available on the baseball schedule page at www.LionSports.net.

Wednesday evening, Jacob Williams and Daniel Midyett ripped back-to-back solo home runs in the fifth inning, and catcher Chris Eades knocked a two-run homer later in the inning, as the Lions powered past Jackson State, 11-5, at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field.

Heading into the series at A&M-Corpus Christi, Brett Hoffman (.400), Kevin Carr (.370), Kennon Menard (.364), Chris Eades (.356) and Daniel Midyett (.351) lead Southeastern at the plate. Hoffman's batting average is the second-highest in the Southland. Midyett's five home runs and 21 runs scored are team highs. Ryan Byers owns a team-best 18 RBIs and 10 stolen bases.

The Lions are hitting a Southland-best .308 as a team and have been successful on 36-of-49 stolen base attempts, also tops in the conference. Southeastern is fifth nationally in walks (117), seventh in hits (243) and on-base percentage (.416), and 11th in runs scored (165). The pitching staff has compiled a 4.09 ERA, fanning 191 batters in 200.1 innings pitched.

Tate Scioneaux (3-1, 4.91), a junior right-hander from Reserve, Louisiana, draws the series opening nod for the Lions. He matches up with fellow righty Matt Danton (2-2, 0.82) for the Islanders. The Lions will send junior right-hander Jake Johnson (3-0, 1.26) to the mound in the nightcap against A&M-Corpus Christi left-hander Trevor Belicek (2-1, 2.35).

Southpaw Kyle Cedotal (2-1, 1.11), a junior from Denham Springs, Louisiana, draws the starting nod for Southeastern in Saturday's series finale against Islander right-hander Devin Skapura (1-2, 4.29).

Jordan Lee (.328), Kyle Danford (.313) and Casey Thomas (.300) lead A&M-Corpus Christi at the plate. Danford owns a team-best three home runs and 21 RBIs. Lee and Danford have each scored a team-high 14 runs. Tyler Ware leads the squad with seven stolen bases.

The Islanders are hitting .260 as a team and have been successful on 22-of-31 stolen base attempts. The pitching staff has compiled a 3.03 ERA, fanning 129 batters in 145.2 innings pitched.

A&M-Corpus Christi has dropped back-to-back games. The Islanders won their first two games at Nicholls State last weekend before falling in the series finale. They then lost an 8-0 non-conference decision Monday at McNeese State.
