HAMMOND, La. – Southeastern Louisiana's bats came alive Sunday at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field, but the real story of the Lions' 11-0, seven-inning Southland Conference win over Abilene Christian was the pitching of junior
Kyle Cedotal.
The left-hander from Denham Springs, Louisiana, carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning against Abilene Christian (2-13, 2-4 Southland) and struck out a career-high 14 batters.
Southeastern (15-6, 4-2 Southland) gave Cedotal (2-1) all the run support he would need in the second inning.
Kevin Carr led off the inning with a double to left field and moved to third on a one-out wild pitch by Wildcat starting pitcher Thomas Altimont (0-4).
Chris Eades, a junior catcher from Slidell, Louisiana, followed with an RBI single up the middle to put the Lions up, 1-0.
Southeastern would not go away, however, scoring three more runs after two outs in the inning.
Ryan Byers, a sophomore from Ponchatoula, Louisiana, drew a walk to keep the inning alive. With Eades already standing on third after a pair of wild pitches during Byers' plate appearance, Byers swiped second base.
Kennon Menard, a sophomore from Lafayette, Louisiana, followed with a two-run single through the left side.
Abilene Christian left fielder Marcelle Carter charged in hard, setting up for a throw to the plate, but ran past the ball and Menard wound up at third base.
Jacob Seward, a sophomore from New Orleans, Louisiana, drove Menard in with a single.
The Lions tacked on a single run in the third, and then expanded their lead with three runs in each the fourth and fifth innings.
All the while, Cedotal methodically ran through the Wildcat batting order. He fanned at least one batter in each inning, fanning the side in the second. He struck out the first two batters in the sixth and after surrendering a single to Aaron Draper, breaking up his no-hit bid, Cedotal fanned the final batter of the inning.
Cedotal needed just 77 pitches for the complete game shutout, throwing 56 for strikes. Altimont was tagged with the loss.
Carr (2-for-4), Menard (2-for-3), Seward (2-for-3) and
Jacob Williams (2-for-3) all turned in multi-hit performances at the plate. Menard drove in a pair.
Carson Crites, Eades, Bett Hoffman,
Daniel Midyett, Seward and Williams each picked up an RBI.
The Lions won the first game of the series, 11-3, Friday and Abilene Christian picked up a 9-2 win on Saturday.
Southeastern travels to Tulane for a 6:30 p.m. contest Tuesday in New Orleans, Louisiana.
