JACKSON, Miss. – Southeastern Louisiana pounded out 21 hits in freezing temps Tuesday on its way to a 19-10 win over Jackson State at Robert "Bob" Braddy, Sr. Field.
Southeastern (4-0) sent nine men to the plate in the first inning, scoring three unearned runs, and never looked back.
Jackson State (3-2) threatened to get back into the game with a seven-run seventh, but the Lions responded with four more runs in the eighth to freeze the comeback attempt.
Southeastern scored in five of the first six innings, jumping out to 15-3 lead at one point.
Kevin Carr was 4-for-4 with three runs scored and one RBI. Sophomore infielder
Carson Crites was 3-for-7 with three runs scored and a pair of RBIs in his Lion debut.
Ryan Byers was 3-for-7 with one run scored and three RBIs.
Freshmen
Zachary Clark,
Nico Cuccia and
Taylor Schwaner all picked up the first hits and RBIs of their careers. Cuccia, a catcher from Slidell, Louisiana, earned his first start behind the plate. Clark, a utility player from Springfield, Louisiana, and Schwaner, an infielder from New Orleans, Louisiana, picked up their firsts as pinch hitters.
Every starter in the lineup picked up at least one hit and either scored a run or picked up an RBI.
Freshman
Mac Sceroler (1-0), a right-hander from Denham Springs, Louisiana, earned the first win of his career after tossing 2.1 scoreless innings of relief. Freshman Dreagan Bethel, a right-hander from Walker, Louisiana, also tossed 2.1 innings of scoreless relief.
The Lions return home Wednesday to Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field for a 6 p.m. game against Tulane (2-1). Anyone who purchases a ticket to the Southeastern-Tulane baseball game will receive free admission to the joint women's-men's basketball doubleheader Saturday at the University Center with their baseball ticket stub.
