THIBODAUX, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana men's basketball squad extended its winning streak to three games with a 65-59 Southland Conference win Saturday over Nicholls State at Stopher Gym.
Southeastern (8-16, 5-6 Southland) outlasted Nicholls (7-15, 4-8 Southland) in a choppy contest that included 40 points off turnovers, 47 free throw attempts, a pair of technical fouls and three players fouling out.
Tied 31-31 at the half, the Lions would fall behind by three points in the second half before going up by five in a span of about four minutes. Freshman forward
Bret Barclay put Southeastern up, 41-36, with the first 3-pointer of his career at the 12:27 mark.
The Colonels would tie the game up three more times down the stretch, but Southeastern would not fall behind.
Zay Jackson (8:39) and
DeVonte Upson (0:53) would foul out for Southeastern and the Colonels lost the game's top player Sam McBeath (1:09) to fouls.
Upson led a trio of Lions in double-digit scoring with 12 points.
Jimmie Duplessis, a junior from New Orleans, Louisiana, added a season-high 11 and Jackson scored 10 points.
Dylon Maggio, a freshman guard from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, established a career high in points for the second-straight game. Maggio chipped in nine points, all on 3-pointers.
Southeastern shot 53.5 percent from the floor (23-of-43), including 53.3 percent from three-point range (8-of-15). The Lions converted 11-of-18 from the free throw line (61.1 percent).
McBeath led all players with 14 points and seven rebounds. Richie Lewis added 11 points for the Colonels, nine of them coming off free throws.
Nicholls shot 35.7 percent from the floor (15-of-47), including 29.4 percent from three-point range (5-of-17). The Colonels converted 24-of-29 from the free throw line (82.8 percent) and out-rebounded Southeastern, 27-26.
Both teams scored 20 points of turnovers, a total that accounted for almost one-third of the combined score.
Southeastern travels to McNeese State (9-14, 3-9 Southland) for a 7 p.m. tipoff Monday at Burton Coliseum. The Cowboys dropped a 75-72 decision Saturday to Northwestern State in Lake Charles, Louisiana.
