Golden Lions Take Advantage Of Southeastern Miscues

UAPB scores 27 points off turnovers in win over Lions

WEST POINT, N.Y. – Arkansas-Pine Bluff took advantage of its opponent's miscues Saturday, scoring almost half of its points off Southeastern Louisiana turnovers for a 62-60 win over the Lions at Christl Arena in the Barclay's Center Classic.

Southeastern (1-6) turned the ball over a season-high 25 times, leading to 27 points for UAPB (2-5).

The Lions jumped out to an early lead, going up 11-3 at the 14:01 mark on a layup by Keith Charleston, a junior from Little Rock, Arkansas. UAPB went on a 6-0 run to pull within a basket, but the Lions picked up jumpers from Mo Greenwood, a freshman from Sharon, Mississippi, and Zay Jackson for a 15-9 lead at the midway point of the half.

After a short-lived 22-21 lead for the Golden Lions, Charleston countered with a layup and Joshua Filmore, a senior from Orlando, Florida, drained a 3-pointer at the 4:10 mark to put Southeastern back on top, 26-22. UAPB came roaring back to take a 30-28 lead at the half in part thanks to five Lion turnovers inside of the final three minutes.

UAPB took advantage of 14 Lion turnovers in the first half, scoring 20 of its 30 points prior to halftime off Southeastern miscues.

The Golden Lions opened up a 37-31 lead at the 17:26 mark of the second half on a 3-pointer from Ghiavonni Robinson. Southeastern would cut the deficit in half on a free throw by Greenwood at the 11:27 mark, but UAPB pushed the lead up to double digits, 52-42, with 6:39 left to play on a Jaquan Lynch layup.

Down 60-53 with 1:55 remaining in regulation, the Lions clawed back within striking distance. Marlain Veal, a freshman from Gretna, Louisiana, pulled Southeastern within five with a layup at the 1:15 mark. Dimi Cook, a freshman from Gulfport, Mississippi, sank a pair of free throws with 50 seconds remaining after being fouled on a rebound.

Charleston pulled the Lions within one, 60-59, just a couple seconds later, laying the ball in after a UAPB turnover.

JoVaughn Love put a little distance between the squads, drilling a jumper with 20 seconds to play. Veal picked up the Lions' final point on a free throw with nine seconds left in the game.

Charleston, who was named to the All-Tournament Team, led the Lions in both points (13) and rebounds (8) for the second-consecutive game. Filmore added 10 points while Jackson, a senior from Hammond, Louisiana, added seven points, six rebounds and six assists.

Southeastern shot 47.6 percent (20-of-42) from the floor, including 35.7 percent (5-of-14) from 3-point range. The Lions were 15-of-25 (60 percent) from the free throw line and won the rebounding battle, 36-23.

Love led all players with 15 points. DeShon Bayless and Charles Jackson each chipped in eight points for the Golden Lions. Love and Trent Whiting each hauled in five rebounds to lead the squad.

UAPB shot 50.9 percent (27-of-53) from the floor, including 25 percent (4-of-16) from 3-point range. The Golden Lions were 4-of-10 (40 percent) from the free throw line.
