Runnin' Bulldogs Run Away From Southeastern In Final Minutes

Gardner-Webb outscores Lions 15-4 to close out game

WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Runnin' Bulldogs of Gardner-Webb ran away with the final three minutes Friday, pulling past Southeastern Louisiana, 77-68, in the Barclay's Center Classic at Christl Arena.

Keith Charleston, a junior from Little Rock, Arkansas, led Southeastern (1-5) with 15 points and 10 rebounds, turning in his second double-double performance of the season. Daniel Grieves (11), a senior from Bay St. Louis, Mississippi, and James Currington (10), a sophomore from Tuscaloosa, Alabama, also scored in double figures against Gardner-Webb (2-4).

Joshua Filmore, a junior from Orlando, Florida, scored the first basket of the game, just 50 seconds in, but the Lions quickly fell behind on a 3-pointer from Harold McBride at the 18:45 mark. Southeastern spent the rest of the first half playing catch up.

Gardner-Webb built a 26-16 lead at the 8:41 mark on a 3-pointer by Dylan Poston, but the Lions pulled back within a basket at the 6:07 mark on a dunk by Jordan Capps, a junior from Norcross, Georgia.

The Runnin' Bulldogs again pushed their lead back up, 35-26, on a 3-pointer by Isaiah Ivey at the 3:55 mark, but Southeastern clawed right back within a single possession, 39-37, on Marlain Veal's buzzer-beating layup leading into halftime. A freshman from Gretna, Louisiana, Veal chipped in eight points for the Lions.

Currington tied the game, 39-39, 34 seconds into the second half with a layup.

Gardner-Webb went back up by six, 49-43, on a pair of free throws from Ivey at the 15:58 mark, but with exactly 14:00 to play in regulation Dimi Cook, a freshman from Gulfport, Mississippi, gave the Lions their first lead, 50-49, since the game's opening basket.

Trading leads a couple times in the final 10 minutes of the game, Gardner-Webb tied the game, 64-64, on a Tyrell Nelson layup with 3:06 to play and took the lead for good, 66-64, at the 2:39 mark on another layup by Nelson.

The Runnin' Bulldogs outscored Southeastern 15-4 in the game's final 3:06 of regulation.

Southeastern shot 45.2 percent (28-of-62) from the floor, including 25 percent (4-of-16) from 3-point range. The Lions were 8-of-13 (61.5 percent) from the free throw line.

Ivey led all players with 21 points and his six rebounds was also a team high. Nelson (11) and McBride (10) both chipped in double-digit point totals for the Runnin' Bulldogs.
