First-half run sends Xavier past Lady Lions

CINCINNATI, Ohio. – Xavier (Ohio) used a 30-7 surge to end the first half to pull away to a 67-27 non-conference win over Southeastern Louisiana Wednesday night in the Cintas Center.

The 27 points tied a school record for fewest points by Southeastern, equaling the mark set in a 72-27 loss at LSU during the 2009-10 season. The Lady Lions (0-6) closed out the four-game road trip shooting 19 percent (11-of-58) from the field, including 0-for-8 on 3-pointers. Nanna Pool led Southeastern with eight points and seven rebounds while Kyle Felton came off the bench to score six points. Taylin Underwood had six steals.

Southeastern had its best defensive performance of the season, holding Xavier (3-1) to 32.8 percent (20-of-61), including 6-of-23 (26.1 percent) on 3s. The points scored and field goal percentage were both season lows by a Lady Lion opponent this season. Briana Glover and Kayla Davis each scored 10 points for the Musketeers. Anniina Aijanen had 15 rebounds and Imani Partlow 12 as Xavier held a 64-30 rebounding margin.

Xavier never trailed after getting out to a 5-0 lead on a 3-pointer by Marquia Turner at the 9:05 mark. Southeastern rallied to pull to within 10-8 on Erica Hernandez's jumper with 5:32 left. But a Leah Schaefer layup off a pass from Turner opened a 12-0 run for the Musketeers.

A pair of Aijanen free throws made it 22-8 with 2:03 left in the period before Chey Stewart hit a free throw for the Lady Lions with 41 seconds remaining. Pool ended Southeastern's 5:27 field goal drought with a jumper with 5 seconds left that made it 25-11 going into the second quarter.

Pool scored off an Underwood assist to make it 27-13 with 9:05 remaining in the half but Xavier answered with a 13-2 run to take a 40-15 halftime lead. A pair of Maddison Blackwell free throws gave the Musketeers a 32-13 lead at the 6:19 mark. After Underwood fed Felton for a layup with 6:03 left, Xavier scored eight unanswered points behind layups by Glover, Jada Byrd and Aliyah Zantt.

Xavier continued the run as the third quarter opened, scoring 11 straight points to go up 51-15 on a Martha Thompson 3 with 3:59 remaining. Hernandez broke Southeastern's 12:14 scoreless spell with a free throw at the 3:49 mark. A Davis 3 with 28 seconds remaining gave the Musketeers their biggest lead at 59-16 before Underwood got the Lady Lions' first field goal in more than 16 minutes with a jumper with 2 seconds left.

Southeastern got layups by Felton and Underwood, a jumper by Hernandez and two Felton free throws with 2:27 left in the fourth quarter.

Southeastern returns home for the first time since Nov. 16 to host ULM Sunday at 2 p.m. The game is Kyle Felton/Chambria Harrison Trading Card Day with the first 150 fans receiving cards of the two freshmen from Georgia courtesy of PRIDE.
