DAYTON, Ohio. – Taylin Underwood scored 17 of her game-high 25 points in the first half to keep Southeastern Louisiana close but Wright State used a 21-7 run to open the third quarter to pull away to a 106-72 non-conference win in the Nutter Center Monday night.
The loss sent Southeastern to a 0-5 start for the first time since 1996-97 and the fourth time in school history. The Lady Lions will try to pick up their first win when they conclude their four-game road trip at Xavier (Ohio) Wednesday at 6 p.m.
Southeastern shot a season-high 43.9 percent from the field, including 44.4 on 3s, in setting a season high for points. Underwood was 4-for-4 on 3-pointers in the first half and 6-of-11 overall while also leading the Lady Lions with seven rebounds and four steals.
Erica Hernandez added 19 points, 10 coming in the first half, while joining Underwood with three assists.
Nanna Pool contributed 12 points while
Kyle Felton came off the bench to score 10.
Wright State (4-1) had five players in double figures, led by Kim Demmings with 18. Emily Vogelpohl finished with 17 points, 14 coming in the first half. Antania Hayes had a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds while Richelle van der Keijl had 14 points and MacKenzie Taylor 13.
Wright State led just 41-35 at the half but pulled away with a 17-6 run in the opening minutes of the third quarter. After Pool got Southeastern to within 44-39 with a jumper with 9:04 left in the quarter, Demmings hit a 3 before going in for a layup. Hayes and van der Keijl followed with layups to extend the lead to 55-39 at the 6:26 mark.
Pool got Southeastern back on the board with two free throws with 6:01 left but a 3 by Vogelpohl gave the Raiders a 58-41 lead with 5:59 remaining. Taylor and Hayes both hit 3s to make it 68-45 with 1:16 left in the quarter. Layups by
Chey Stewart and Hernandez cut the deficit to 19 with 30 seconds left but a 3 by Taylor gave Wright State a 71-49 going into the final period.
The Raiders got the lead out to 82-51 on a Demmings jumper with 7:04 remaining in the game.
Wright State took a 7-0 lead with 7:32 left in the first behind a pair of layups by van der Keijl. But Southeastern stormed back to tie the game at 7 on a jumper by Hernandez at the 5:50 mark.
After van der Keijl gave the lead back to the Raiders with a layup at the 3:36 mark, Underwood put the Lady Lions up 12-11 with a 3 with 3:28 remaining. Two more 3s by Hernandez and Underwood and a jumper by Pool gave Southeastern a 19-13 lead with 1:31 left. The Lady Lions led 21-16 going into the second quarter.
Both teams went cold from the field to start the second period as a van der Keijl layup was the lone field goal over the first 4:52. A pair of Vogelpohl free throws put Wright State back in the lead at 22-21 at the 5:33 mark before Hernandez drained a 3 to give Southeastern a 25-23 lead with 5:08 remaining in the half.
After Vogelpohl hit a 3, Underwood tied the game at 27 with two free throws with four minutes left. But Wright State answered with a 10-0 run following a pair of putbacks by Hayes and Vogelpohl. Vogelpohl followed with a 3 from the left wing, then grabbed a steal in the front court and drove in, forcing Southeastern to use a timeout with 2:27 left with the Raiders ahead 37-27.
Wright State built a 39-27 lead before Stewart and Underwood hit free throws and Underwood knocked down a 3 to make it 39-32 with 53 seconds left. Underwood hit another 3 with 6 seconds left to pull the Lady Lions to within 41-35 at the half.
Southeastern shot 50 percent in the first half, including 66.7 percent on 3s.
