LAKE CHARLES, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana volleyball team held off McNeese State for a five-set win in Southland Conference play Tuesday at Memorial Gym, 14-25, 25-18, 25-23, 18-25, 15-11, to even its conference record.
After dropping the first set on the road, Southeastern (8-10, 2-2 Southland) rebounded to take a 2-1 lead in the match. Pulling ahead, 9-6, on three-consecutive blocks in the second set, the Lady Lions held on to even the match.
Southeastern took the early lead in the third set, but McNeese (5-13, 2-3 Southland) fought back to tie the set as late as 22-22. A kill by
Madi Odom and then a Cowgirl attack error put the Lady Lions up by a set.
McNeese fought back to tie the match, taking the fourth set by seven points, but failed to shut down the Southeastern offense in the final set. The Lady Lions slugged their way to victory with a .391 attack percentage in the deciding set.
Landry Bullock's 12 kills led the Lady Lion offense.
Veronica Turk, whose career-high nine total blocks played a key part Southeastern recording a season-high 16 blocks, recorded 10 kills.
Haley Baker (25 assists) and
Mikayla Shippy, who dished out 19 assists and posted 10 digs for the 11th double-double of her career, split setting duties. Odom led the squad with a career-high 17 digs and
Brooke Balser added an additional 13 for Southeastern.
Malina Sanchez led all players with 24 kills, recording a double-double with 17 digs as well. Rae Myers added an additional 11 kills for McNeese and Kelly Graham handed out 48 assists. Monica Hudgins had a hand in nine of the Cowgirls' 12 team blocks.
Adison Giambrone led four McNeese players in double-digit digs with a match-high 20, including Sanchez, Bridget Justis (11) and Hailee Showers (11).
Southeastern wraps up its three-match Southland Conference road trip Saturday at the University of New Orleans before returning home to host Stephen F. Austin the Thursday of homecoming week (Oct. 15).
