HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana volleyball squad dropped a Southland Conference match to McNeese State in four sets, 22-25, 25-22, 25-21, 25-17, Saturday at the University Center.
Southeastern (11-14, 5-6 Southland) came out strong, grabbing the first set behind strong arm of outside hitter
Sarah Friedman.
The sophomore from Houston, Texas, dominated the match's opening set against McNeese (11-16, 6-6 Southland), recording 11 of her career-high 19 kills. No other player picked up more than four kills in the set while Friedman was slugging away with a .769 attack percentage (11 kills, 1 error, 13 attempts).
After the first set, the Lady Lion offense cooled and McNeese took advantage of the opportunity to grab the remaining three sets for the win.
Freidman led all players in kills and
Landry Bullock contributed an additional 11 for Southeastern. Setter
Haley Baker recorded the first double-double of her career, dishing out 39 assists and posting 10 digs. The freshman from Elkton, Maryland, tied her career high in assists and reached double-digit digs for the first time.
Monica Ramon (17) led four Lady Lions with double-figure dig totals, including
Brooke Balser (16) and
Madi Odom (14).
Malina Sanchez paced the Cowgirl offense with 18 kills and picked up 13digs for a double-double. Shanna chipped in 11 more kills while Kelly Graham handed out 45 assists. Ebony Lewis had a hand in five of McNeese's 10 team blocks. Bridget Justis led all players with 27 digs and Hailee Showers contributed 10 more.
Southeastern wraps up a five-match homestand at the University Center this coming week with contests Tuesday against New Orleans, Thursday against Sam Houston State and Saturday against Lamar.
