Lady Lions shut out UCA on Senior Night

Zadro scores lone goal in opening minutes

HAMMOND, La. –  Hope Sabadash recorded her Southland Conference-high eighth shutout of the season and Ana Zadro scored less than three minutes into the match to give the Southeastern Louisiana women's soccer team a 1-0 win over Central Arkansas on Senior Night Friday in Strawberry Stadium.

Sabadash and Zadro, both underclassmen, were able to make the night even more special for seniors Maddie Allen, Cheyenne Maxwell, Megan Simon, Gisenia Utreras and Kayla Vera who were honored before the match.

"It was an absolute fabulous night for them," Southeastern head coach Blake Hornbuckle said. "We got the early goal and created some other chances. We're going to have to be a little sharper on both sides of the ball come Sunday against a really tough Northwestern team."

Southeastern (10-4-2, 5-3-1) closes out its home schedule against Northwestern State Sunday at 1 p.m.

Sabadash made three saves on the evening, including a diving stop of a shot by Alex Moore in the second half.

"I thought Hope Sabadash was fantastic in goal," Hornbuckle said. "They had one or two opportunities that we did a great job shutting down as well as we could."

Southeastern took the quick lead when Bri Singh headed a throw-in by Allen to Zadro who beat Central Arkansas keeper Lauren Mercuri with a shot inside the left post. Zadro's third goal of the season gave the Lady Lions the 1-0 lead 2:32 into the match. It was the fourth assist of the season for Singh.

Sabadash and the Lady Lion defense then made the goal stand up, staving off eight shots by UCA (6-10-1, 3-5-1). The first came at the 5:15 mark as Sabadash stopped an attempt by Shelby Wilson.

After Alex Moore missed high for the Bears, Mercuri saved an attempt by Singh at the 8:28 mark. Mercuri, who finished with six saves, grabbed another attempt by Singh at 20:22.

After Stacia Carroll missed high for UCA and Vanessa Arzaluz and Maddie Kresevic missed for Southeastern, Mercuri saved a shot by Lauren Lorentz at the 36:56 mark. Wilson missed wide on an attempt with 1:59 left in the half.

Southeastern threatened in the opening minutes of the second half as Singh and Elizabeth McMurray missed on attempts and Sofia Olsson was stopped by Mercuri. Camille Bassett sailed a shot high for UCA before Sabadash grabbed a shot by Bassett at the 56:36 mark.

Sabadash made her final save on a shot by Moore at 77:21. Mercuri came up with a stop of Arzaluz at 78:41.
