League-leading SFA shuts out Lady Lions

Defense keeps Southeastern close

NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Southeastern maintained a consistent attack at Stephen F. Austin Sunday afternoon but could not capitalize as the Southland Conference-leading Ladyjacks came away with a 2-0 win in women's soccer action.

Southeastern (9-4-2, 4-3-1) out-shot Stephen F. Austin (7-6-2, 6-0-2) 16-12 and out five corners to the Ladyjacks' three but was shut out for the second straight match. Lillie Ehlert and Allyson Smith (one save) combined on the clean sheet, SFA's fifth of the season.

The Southeastern defense kept the Lady Lions in the match with keeper Hope Sabadash making three saves.

"I thought we played extremely well in areas of the game," Southeastern head coach Blake Hornbuckle said. "We were inconsistent finding the net. We created some great opportunities.

"I thought Gisenia Utreras had a good day in distribution and going toward the goal. Cheyenne Maxwell had a really strong day in the back along with Hope Sabadash."

Amanda Doyle scored in the first half and Breanna Moore added a second-half goal for SFA. Hanna Barker assisted on both goals.

Southeastern went on the attack early as Maddie Allen missed wide left at the 2:22 mark.

Sabadash saved a shot by Barker at the 7:37 mark. But SFA took a 1-0 lead 21 seconds later when Barker sent a through ball to Doyle who chipped it past Sabadash for her seventh goal of the season.

Kayla Vera missed wide right on a header at 19:29, then had another shot blocked. Amanda Fox hit the crossbar for SFA at the 28:29 mark.

Gisenia Utreras had a shot blocked at 31:31 and Ana Zadro had a pair of shots deflected in the final 10 minutes of the half for the Lady Lions.

Both teams opened the second half with a flurry of shots. Sabadash stopped a shot by Barker at the 48:23 mark. Maggie Ramsey and Maddie Kresevic both missed high over the next 3:20 before Allyson Smith saved an attempt by Ramsey at 54:57. Kelly Ann Craig missed wide left for SFA at the 55:45 mark.

Sabadash grabbed a shot by Doyle at 61:46 before Southeastern came back with a shot by Utreras that sailed high at the 66:24 mark. After Vera sent a shot wide left at 69:02, the Ladyjacks countered as Madison Hall shot high at the 70:03 mark.

After Craig missed high for SFA, Ramsey and Utreras could not cash in on shots at 76:52 and 79:34, respectively. Moore then added an insurance goal for the Ladyjacks, heading in a shot to the back post off a cross from Barker for her second goal of the season.

Southeastern opens its final home stand of the season Friday against Central Arkansas in Strawberry Stadium at 7 p.m. The match will be the Lady Lions' Senior Day with Allen, Vera, Utreras, Maxwell and Megan Simon being honored.
