Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Filmore, Lions Down UIW In Double OT, 108-98

Sophomore hits threes at end of both first and second half

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Joshua Filmore hit a three pointer with 3.3 seconds remaining in regulation to tie the game and the Southeastern Louisiana men's basketball squad used an 8-0 run to open the double overtime period on the way to a 108-98 Southland Conference win Saturday over Incarnate Word at the McDermott Convocation Center.

Southeastern (5-12, 2-2 Southland) overcame 12 lead changes in the game, topping Incarnate Word (9-5, 1-3 Southland) for its first road win of the season.

"This team is growing and getting better," coach Jay Ladner said. "The attitude was 'we're not going to get a break. We have to go win this game.' I wish we would have had that for the first 40 minutes, but that's the intensity level we needed to play with.

"The players did an excellent job of adjusting down the stretch. We knew they were explosive offensively. They ended up with 98 points, but it took them a long time to get there. I'm proud of our guys. This keeps us in the race."

Southeastern led for more than 13 minutes in the first half, but UIW made a late charge to go up by seven nearing the half. Filmore, as he would do later in the game, hit from three-point range at the buzzer, cutting the Lions deficit down to 44-40 heading into the locker room.

UIW went up by six late in the second half, 81-75, on a layup by Mitchell Badillo with 2:02 remaining. Zay Jackson, who led the Lions with 25 points, answered with a layup of his own just 10 seconds later.

Jackson brought Southeastern within two, 82-80, rolling in another layup with 26 seconds left in regulation. With 12 seconds left Badillo converted just one of two free throws, leaving the door open for a repeat of Filmore's end-of-the-half heroics.

In the first overtime period the Lions built a 90-85 lead with 2:16 remaining, but UIW got five points from Denzel Livingston down the stretch.

Southeastern thought it had won the game at the end of the first overtime. After a Cardinal turnover on a an inbounds pass with two seconds left, Jackson drove to the hoop for a potential game-winning layup. Following a lengthy review, officials waved off the basket and forced a second overtime.

Fired up, the Lions opened with an 8-0 run on back-to-back threes from Filmore and Andrew Guillory, and a jumper from Jackson. UIW would get as close as 102-97 with 56 seconds left in the the second overtime, but Southeastern hit its free throws down the stretch to seal the win.

DeVonte Upson turned in a double-double performance, scoring a career-high 19 points and grabbing 12 rebounds. He joined Jackson, Filmore (23), Onochie Ochie (15) and Guillory (11) in double digit scoring. Jackson dished out a career-high nine assists.

Southeastern shot 58.7 percent from the floor (37-of-63), including 54.5 percent from three-point range (12-of-22). The Lions converted 22-of-31 from the free throw line (71 percent). Rebounds ended up even between the two teams, 38-38.

Livingston, the conference's leading scorer, poured in a game-high 27 points to lead the Cardinals. Kyle Hittle (21), Badillo (18) and Jontrell Walker (15) also scored in double digits.

UIW, the top shooting team in the Southland, shot 43.8 percent from the floor (35-of-80), including 24.1 percent from three-point range (7-of-29). The Cardinals converted 21-of-26 from the free throw line (80.8 percent).

The Lions went extra for the first time since defeating Abilene Christian, 85-77 in double overtime, on January 11, 2014, in Hammond, Louisiana.

Southeastern and Lamar (9-8, 3-2 Southland) face off at 7 p.m. Monday at the Montagne Center in Beaumont, Texas. The Cardinals dropped a 96-84 decision at Northwestern State.
