BEAUMONT, Texas – The Southeastern Louisiana men's basketball team dropped a tightly-contested 57-50 decision Monday to Lamar in Southland Conference play at the Montagne Center.
Southeastern (5-13, 2-3 Southland) was looking to put together its first winning streak of the season after its double-overtime victory this past Saturday at Incarnate Word. Lamar (10-8, 4-2 Southland) is experiencing a resurgence this season under head coach Tic Price, having already won more games this season than the last two combined.
"We had a good spurt in the first half, but I think we got complacent," head coach
Jay Ladner said. "We had a 10-point lead, things were going good and they had a hard time stopping us. We kind of shut down from there and it was a struggle the rest of the way.
"Give Lamar credit. They fought and scrapped to a blue-collar win. It wasn't anything pretty on either side, but we had an opportunity to win. I'm disappointed. We have to learn how to win."
Southeastern went up by as much as 10 in the first half following a pair of free throws by
Andrew Guillory at the 5:17 mark, but Lamar closed out the half on a 14-3 run to take a one-point lead into the locker room, 29-28.
The Lions would go back up by five in the second half, 42-37, on a
DeVonte Upson layup with 9:01 remaining, but Lamar would close out the game on a 20-8 run.
Zay Jackson was the only Lion to reach double digits, scoring 19 points.
Joshua Filmore scored seven and Upson added six points to go with a game-high 12 rebounds.
Southeastern shot 31.5 percent from the floor (17-of-54), including 27.8 percent from three-point range (5-of-18). The Lions converted 11-of-20 from the free throw line (55 percent).
Tyran de Lattibeaudiere turned in a double-double performance to lead Lamar, scoring 14 points and grabbing 10 boards. Anthony Holliday scored 12 and Marcus Owens added 10 points for the Cardinals.
Lamar shot 31.5 percent from the floor (17-of-54), including 27.8 percent from three-point range (5-of-18). The Cardinals converted 18-of-22 from the free throw line (81.8 percent) and out-rebounded Southeastern, 40-38.
Southeastern takes a week off from game action, returning to the University Center's court Monday at 7 p.m. against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in a Southland Conference contest.
