ABILENE, Texas – Abilene Christian sophomore Alyssa Gerner scored the game winning goal in the 70
th minute, as ACU defeated Southeastern Louisiana, 2-1, in Southland Conference women's soccer action Sunday afternoon at Shotwell Stadium.
The loss was the first in league play for the Lady Lions (10-2, 3-1 Southland), snapping the team's four-match winning streak. ACU improved to 6-6 overall and 3-1 in league action.
Sophomore
Bri Singh scored her league-high 11
th goal in the contest. The score was the 20
th of the Lancaster, California native's career, moving her into a tie with former Lady Lion Candice Wallace for 10
th place on the school's career list. Her 11 goals also move her into a tie for ninth on the school's single-season list with former Lady Lions Maiya Cooper and Cory Cochrane.
Senior
Chelsea Villaescusa was credited with an assist on Singh's score. In just her second collegiate start, SLU sophomore goalkeeper
Casey Jeanfreau was credited with seven saves.
"We created opportunities, but just couldn't find the back of the net," Southeastern head coach
Blake Hornbuckle said of his team, which attempted 16 shots in the loss. "We were very pleased with the efforts of our entire back line. Bri also created a lot of opportunities with her work rate up top."
Singh gave the Lady Lions the lead in the 12
th minute. She took a feed from Villaescusa and hooked a shot into the lower left corner past sophomore goalkeeper Kelsey Dombrowski to stake SLU to the early advantage.
ACU evened the score late in the first half. Freshman Baylee Mitchell got enough space to hit a shot from 10 yards out to tie the score at 1-1.
Gerner's game-winner also came from long distance. She took a pass from freshman Leslie Snider and put a shot in from about 12 yards out over the reach of Jeanfreau.
Southeastern will close out a three-game road trip on Sunday, when it heads to Lamar for a 1 p.m. match in Beaumont, Texas.
