HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana volleyball team fought off a sluggish start Thursday at the University Center to post a thrilling five-set win over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, 9-25, 25-19, 21-25, 25-23, 15-13, in Southland Conference action.
Southeastern (4-9, 2-0 Southland) rebounded from negative attack percentages in the first and third sets by hitting .283 (16-3-46, K-E-TA) in the second and .250 (20-6-56) in the fourth. The Lady Lions went back-and-forth with the Islanders (7-11, 0-1 Southland) in the final set, eventually picking up match point on a kill by
Landry Bullock.
Sarah Friedman, a freshman from Houston, Texas, led three Lady Lions with double digit kills, finishing with a career-high 16.
Veronica Turk added 13 kills and Bullock chipped in another 10 to aid Southeastern's attack.
Mikayla Shippy handed out 43 assists.
Morgan Todd tied a match high with 26 digs while three other Lady Lions posted career highs, including
Parrie Hartley (24),
Brooke Balser (23) and
Kacey Freeman (12).
Brianna Brink led all players with 18 kills and Ashley Phelps added 12 to lead the Islander offense. Kristyn Nicholson handed out 29 assists and Chelby Stanford chipped in an additional 19. Five players recorded double-digit digs for AMCC, including Hailey King with 26.
