Late Southeastern Rally Falls Short Against Southern Miss

Lady Lions open Southland Conference play Tuesday at New Orleans

HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana volleyball team rallied late Tuesday to force a fourth set against Southern Miss, but eventually fell short by a score of 25-19, 25-17, 25-27, 25-19, at the University Center.

Southeastern (2-9) rallied from an eight-point deficit in the third set, eventually tying the Golden Eagles (10-4), 24-24. Late substitutions by coach Jim Smoot paid off as Sarah Friedman and Lindsay Grace provided key plays for the Lady Lions in the final stages of the comeback.

Riding the comeback momentum, Southeastern jumped out to a 6-2 lead in the fourth set. This time Southern Miss rallied with a 12-4 run, building a five-point advantage. The Lady Lions attempted to put together another rally of their own and force a fifth set, but the Golden Eagles held on for the win.

Parrie Hartley led the Lady Lions with 12 kills (.211 attack percentage), recording a double-double with 13 digs. Mikayla Shippy handed out 18 assists while Morgan Miller chipped in an additional 15 for Southeastern. Morgan Todd led the team with 18 digs.

Stephany Purdue, one of three Golden Eagles to reach double digits, led all players with 14 kills. Quinci Hayward added 11 kills and Jasmine Crowell chipped in 10. Kristen Fleming handed out a team-high 24 assists and picked up 14 digs to record a double-double. Makareta Rademakers dished out an additional 15 assists. Southern Miss libero Mary Pursell posted a match-high 33 digs.

Southeastern opens Southland Conference play a week from Tuesday at the University of New Orleans.
