Cutura, Hills Shut Down Incarnate Word Bats In Lion Win

Southeastern one game out of first in Southland Conference

Box Score

HAMMOND, La. – Southeastern Louisiana right-handers Andro Cutura and Dylan Hills combined to pitch a five-hit shutout Friday against Incarnate Word, 3-0, in Southland Conference play at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field.

As dominant as Lion pitching was, UIW's Geno Encina was up to the task through the first six innings as he match the zeroes Cutura posted on the scoreboard. Each team managed to scrape together three hits heading into the seventh-inning stretch.

Southeastern's bats came alive in the seventh, scoring all three runs. With one out, Andrew Godbold smoked a single off the mound and into center field. As Godbold attempted to steal second base, Daniel Midyett was hit by a pitch to put a pair of runners on base.

Brett Hoffman followed with an RBI single up the middle, driving in Godbold. Cardinal center fielder Mark Whitehead attempted to gun down Midyett at third base, but the throw kicked out of play. Midyett scored on the error and Hoffman, who moved up to second on the throw, was granted third. Kyle Cedotal plated Hoffman with a chopper over the head of the drawn-in infield. Hoffman has driven in the game-winning run in two of the last three games for the Lions.

Cutura (6-1) held UIW (10-21, 3-4 Southland) to four hits in eight innings of work, fanning nine without walking a batter, to earn the win. The performance runs his scoreless streak to 17.1 consecutive innings.

Hills pitched a scoreless ninth, fanning a pair, to earn his third of the season and second in as many games. Encina (4-5) suffered the loss despite holding Southeastern (22-12, 8-5 Southland) scoreless through the first six innings.

The Lions' win, coupled with wins by Northwestern State at McNeese, Nicholls State and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, means that heading into Saturday's games the top five teams in the Southland are separated by one game. The Colonels, Cowboys and Demons are tied atop the standings with identical 9-4 records while A&M-Corpus Christi is now 8-5 in conference action.

Saturday is Alumni Day. All former players in attendance will be honored on the field prior to the game with special recognition given to the 2010 squad. Baseball-themed bingo is also available at Saturday's game. The Lions will send sophomore right-hander Tate Scioneaux (5-2, 2.48) to the mound against UIW left-hander Dylan Boss (1-3, 4.58).

As part of Super Lion Saturday, a tailgate party sponsored by Gus O'Krepki will be held leading up to the game. For more info on Super Lion Saturday check out the Lion Athletics Association's new website, www.LionUp.com.
