Lions Drop Tight Game To No. 12 Ole Miss

Rematch set for 4 p.m. Wednesday at The Pat

Box Score

HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana baseball team dropped a tight game to the No. 12-ranked Ole Miss Rebels Tuesday, 2-1, in the opener of a two-game series at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field.

Southeastern (9-6) took the lead first, getting out in front with a run in the bottom of the third inning. Second baseman Brooks Morse drew a walk from Ole Miss lefty Jeremy Massie (1-1) to lead off the inning. After stealing second base, he moved to third on Kevin Carr's infield single. Center fielder Jacob Seward drove in Morse on a fielder's choice grounder to shortstop.

Ole Miss (15-2) answered almost immediately, tying the game with a single run in the fourth. Sean Kennel (1-2) hit Austin Anderson with a pitch leading off the inning. Will Allen, Sikes Orvis and Preston Overbey produced back-to-back-to-back singles, moving station-to-station, to eventually plate Anderson.

Kennel then induced Brantley Bell into a fielder's choice grounder to third, with Brett Hoffman throwing home to get the lead runner. With one out, Rebel catcher Austin Knight grounder into a 6-4-3 double play to end the fourth.

The Rebels threatened in the fifth, but Kennel once again pitched around the trouble.

In the sixth, however, Orvis turned on a pitch and snuck it inside the right field foul pole for his third home run of the season. It gave Ole Miss a 2-1 lead and three Rebel relievers combined to work around Southeastern's attempts to tie the game.

Massie picked up the win and freshman left-hander Wyatt Short picked up his first save of the season. Kennel took the loss for the Lions.

Sophomore left-hander Kyle Cedotal (0-1, 0.00) earns the start for the Lions in the 4 p.m. series finale Wednesday, drawing freshman southpaw Evan Anderson (0-0, 3.38) for the Rebels.

It is another Cane's Challenge game. If the Lions score five or more runs in either game, fans presenting their ticket stub (or student coupon), and purchasing a combo at a participating Raising Cane's, will receive a free combo of equal or lesser value (through the following day).
