Southeastern Heads North In The Southland

Lions head to the states of Arkansas, Oklahoma for two-game conference trip

CONWAY, Ark. – The Southeastern Louisiana men's basketball team heads north for a pair of Southland Conference contests this week, Thursday at Central Arkansas and Saturday at Oral Roberts.

Thursday's 7 p.m. game at Central Arkansas is available on LionVision, Southeastern's subscription-based video stream.

Saturday's 7 p.m. contest at Oral Roberts will be televised by Fox College Sports – Central. The regional sports network's programming is available on AT&T U-verse (Ch. 648), Cox – Baton Rouge (Ch. 256), Cox – New Orleans (Ch. 337) and Direct TV (Ch. 623). It will also be streamed live (subscription required) by the Golden Eagles.

Fans can also follow both games with live statistics and game audio, courtesy UCA and ORU. There is no local radio coverage for either contest. Links for audio, stats and video are available on the basketball schedule page at www.LionSports.net.

Last time out, Southeastern dropped a 90-85 decision to the University of New Orleans, Jan. 30, at the University Center. Twenty-point efforts by JaMichael Hawkins (23) and Antonnio Benton (20), as well as a career-high 17 points from freshman Joshua Filmore, were not enough for the Lions (9-11, 4-5 Southland) to hold off UNO.

Hawkins (14.7 points per game) and Benton (12.3 ppg, 6.9 rebounds) lead the Lions in scoring. Benton, who also leads the team on the boards, is sixth in the conference in rebounding. Dre Evans (2.9 assists) and  Filmore (3.0 apg) have split time at the point directing the Lions' offense.

Halfway through the conference schedule, Southeastern is tied for ninth in the Southland standings. The top eight teams earn a spot in the 2014 Southland Conference Basketball Tournament, March 12-16, at the Merrill Center in Katy, Texas. Two teams ahead of Southeastern, Incarnate Word (DI transition period) and UNO (APR), are ineligible for this year's tournament.

As a team, the Lions are averaging 71.8 points, on 44.3-percent shooting, and 32.5 rebounds. Opponents are averaging 73.2 points, making Southeastern's scoring margin seventh-best in the conference.

Central Arkansas (5-15, 2-7 Southland) fell 78-67 at Nicholls State this past Saturday after opening their road trip with a 76-75 win at McNeese State (Jan. 30).

The Bears are averaging 73.8 points, on 44.4-percent shooting, and 34.0 rebounds as a team. UCA opponents are scoring at an 80.6 points-per-game clip. LaQuentin Miles (22.1 ppg, 6.9 rpg, 3.4 apg), DeShone McClure (13.9 ppg) and Jalen Jackson (11.4 ppg) are UCA's top threats.

Oral Roberts (10-12, 4-5 Southland), which hosts UNO Thursday evening, is riding a four-game losing streak. The Golden Eagles are averaging 70.7 points, on 45.6-percent shooting, and 34.7 rebounds. Opponents are scoring 70.0 points per contest, third lowest in the conference.

Shawn Glover (21.5 ppg) leads ORU, and the Southland, in scoring. Kory Bilbury (12.9 ppg, 6.0 rpg) is the team's top rebounder. D.J. Jackson is handing out 3.5 assists per contest for the Golden Eagles.

Southeastern returns home next week to host McNeese State (Feb. 13) and Nicholls State (Feb. 15). The Nicholls State contest is Take A Kid To The Game Day. All children, age 12 and under, will be admitted free to that contest with a paid adult admission.

Tickets for all home games can be purchased at www.LionSports.net or by calling the Southeastern Athletics Ticket Office, located in the Dugas Center for Southeastern Athletics, at (985) 549-LION.
