Box Score HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana men's basketball team wrapped up an undefeated week with a win over in-state rival Nicholls State, 71-66, Saturday at the University Center.
Southeastern (11-13, 6-7 Southland) led, 35-27, at halftime on the strength of 56.3 percent shooting (9-of-16 from the floor) and a stingy defense that held the Colonels to 9-of-25 (36 percent) from the floor.
Nicholls (10-12, 7-6 Southland) took the lead briefly in the second half on a layup by Amin Torres with 14:05 remaining.
Twice fluctuating between a Colonel lead and a tie score, Southeastern took the lead for good with 10:27 remaining in the game on a jump shot by
JaMichael Hawkins.
The Lions would stretch the lead as high as nine on three separate occasions down the stretch, the last on free throws by
Devonte Upson with 3:09 remaining in the contest. Inside of 10 seconds, Nicholls narrowed the Southeastern lead to two on a Sam McBeath three pointer.
Four Lions scored in double figures, led by
Dre Evans and
Onochie Ochie with 13 points apiece. Hawkins added 12 and
Julian Chiera chipped in another 11 points for Southeastern. Ochie grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.
Jeremy Smith led the Colonels with 16 points. Dantrell Thomas added 15 points and a team-high six rebounds. T.J. Carpenter and McBeath chipped in 8 points each for Nicholls.
Southeastern travels Thursday to the University of New Orleans for a conference contest.
