TAMPA, Fla. – A hot shooting South Florida team was too much for the Southeastern Louisiana men's basketball team Tuesday, falling 78-63 to the Bulls at the Sun Dome.
Southeastern (3-10) held South Florida (6-6) scoreless for a five minute stretch in the middle of the second half, but couldn't make up enough ground to overcome the Bulls' shooting.
"We took them deep into the clock a number of possessions, kind of like we did at Central Florida," head coach
Jay Ladner said. "From the three-point line they had been shooting 28 percent, but today it was over 53 percent. A lot of those shots we had people right there. They made shots today."
South Florida was good on 54.4 percent overall (31-of-57) and 53.8 percent from beyond the arc (7-of-13). Four of the Bulls five starters scored in double digits, including Corey Allen, Jr. (19), Anthony Collins (12), Nehemias Morillo (12) and Chris Perry (10).
Playing its second game in 18 hours, Southeastern gutted out another game without its leading scorer.
Onochie Ochie and
Joshua Filmore led the Lions with 16 points each.
Cedric Jenkins followed up Monday's career-tying performance with 15 points against South Florida.
DeVonte Upson grabbed a game-high nine rebounds.
"
Joshua Filmore played 40 minutes Monday and turned around just over 12 hours later to play 40 more," Ladner said. "As our primary offensive weapon, he had people hanging all over him. That's just the way it is at this level, but I'm real proud of him. He's so integral to what we're doing and you never heard him complain, battling the whole way."
The Lions shot 41.4 percent overall (24-of-58) and 43.5 percent from three-point range (10-of-23). Southeastern was just 5-of-12 (41.7 percent) from the free throw line and got out-rebounded by the Bulls, 40-29.
Southeastern will return to action after the Christmas break, hosting Dillard in an exhibition contest. Opening tip of the game against the Bleu Devils is slated for 6 p.m. Monday at the University Center.
